3. The door to the life-long dream I had of becoming a professional freeskier was shut in 2006 when I overshot
a jump and suffered a spinal-cord injury. Instead of sulking and being miserable, I opened another door that
lead to a road to the greatest opportunity in my life. This new door I opened allowed me to better understand
the concept of “paying it forward.” Although my crash diminished the use and feeling of my lower extremities,
I began to work harder than ever to not only recover, but to understand how to give back. Thanks to the great
people at Sugar Bowl Academy of Lake Tahoe, California, and of the Mad River Valley in Vermont I discovered
the power of community as they raised over $85,000, which allowed me to focus on my recovery.
For over two years I was able to concentrate exclusively on the goal of returning to the mountains and skiing
again due to the generous outpouring of support that I was shown. Although I made sure to personally thank
everyone that supported my recovery in one way or another, I had a strong sense that there was more that I
could do to give thanks to the incredible companies, strangers, families, and friends that had contributed to my
recovery fund. Therefore it was a natural progression to start this non-profit organization. The combination
of paying it forward and community are the corner stones of a solid foundation… a Foundation that would be
launched on a partly sunny day on the 14th of January in 2009 in which James Preston (the other Co-Founder)
and I walked into the Secretary of State of California’s office to establish the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation.
This organization was formed to raise money and awareness for athletes that have suffered a life-altering injury
while pursuing a dream in the winter action sports community. Now, five years later, I literally pinch myself
to make sure that building such a non-profit is a reality. It is my hope to thank everyone that has helped the
Foundation progress to have the vision of becoming the safety net of the winter sports community through the
unique past, present, and future approach to our three program services.
PAST: At the end of 2013, the Winter Empowerment Fund has assisted 54 athletes through the recovery
process, helped them achieve goals during and post injury, as well as inspiring each athlete to live life with a
sense of positivity while moving past difficult times.
PRESENT: Since opening its doors in the spring of 2011, the CR Johnson Healing Center has allowed High Fives
Athletes (and members of the community) to work out their body, mind and spirit in a “no-questions asked”
space. The 2,600 square foot facility in Truckee, CA serves as a positive force in the day-to-day task of regaining
strength and mobility. With over 3,000 visits to the facility in 2013, we know that these athletes and community
members will continue to produce success stories of recovery while utilizing its many offerings, classes and
healers.
FUTURE: Due to the nature of progression in the winter action sports community the need has become clear
to provide education through injury prevention and safety awareness. The B.A.S.I.C.S. program teaches winter
sports enthusiasts to: Be Aware Safe In Critical Situations. This year the program will reach over 55,000 people
with the message that #HelmetsAreCool through live presentations and social media.
All together in the year 2013, the High Fives Foundation served over 58,000 clients, athletes and winter sports
enthusiasts. With that, we constantly remember where we have come from and where we are going, so as to
ensure that we show our gratitude for every person that has ever volunteered, donated, supported, or helped
us expand our reach. Thank you!
In our fifth year, I ask you to engage with the work of the Foundation, to become a positive agent of change
alongside our mission, by simply giving a High Five to one person a day, to continue to spread stoke to all people
in our lives. We are so grateful to be sharing the work we do with you in this report. If you have any questions,

5. The Winter Empowerment Fund is a program service of the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation that provides
support for alternative healing and therapies, rehabilitative and adaptive equipment to athletes that suffer a
life-altering injury while pursuing a dream in the winter action sports community. Funds are allocated to assist
disabled athletes in the recovery process and help achieve goals in the sports they love.

“The encouragement and financial support I received from the Foundation was a miracle. In March, 2013 I split my
sacrum in half, ripped apart my pubic symphysis and fractured my lower vertebrae in a skiing competition. The support
I received allowed me to work with the best team of surgeons, doctors and physical therapists in the industry to hit my
goal of 100% recovery.”

to promote safety and awareness through world-class fundamentals coaching of action sports athletes and
through videos that help promote critical thinking to winter sports enthusiasts of all ages.

service of the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation that provides resources to athletes and community members
in recovery from sport related injuries.
Michelle Rahlves (Owner of The Bar Effect)
“It has been a pleasure to watch the CR Johnson Healing center blossom into such an amazing, full service facility that
serves as an epicenter of healing, rehabilitation and strength conditioning! With the changes we’ve seen in our country

6. ATHLETES
Giray Dadali
As a popular 22-year-old freeskier, Giray was at a competition in March 2013 when he overshot a
landing on a jump and broke his sacrum and pelvis. To help Giray get back to the sport he loves, the
Winter Empowerment Fund provided Giray with a board-approved grant for living expenses, travel,
Trader Joe’s and GNC gift certificates, a gym pass, as well as massage and Acupuncture treatments.
Giray has successfully returned to the slopes and is once again competing as a top-level skier. His
inspirational journey back to skiing can be seen in the video “The Giray Dadali Story” on the High
Fives Foundation’s Vimeo channel.
Andrew Kurka
In 2005, at the age of 13, Andrew suffered a spinal cord injury in an ATV accident while on a fishing
trip. He suffered an incomplete paralysis of the spinal cord at the T10 vertebra level. Two years
later, at the age of 15, Andrew started adaptive skiing. A few years after that, he applied for a grant
from the Winter Empowerment Fund. The board-approved grant awarded to Andrew helped him
progress with new race skis, bindings and a custom sit-ski.
Andrew has been named to the U.S. Paralympic Ski Team to compete for the USA at the 2014
Paralympic Games in Russia. The multi-talented athlete’s story of his return to competition can
been seen in the video “Inspiring Paralympic Skier Going for the Gold at Sochi” on Hooplaha.com.
Sophie Courdurier
Sophie is an active athlete who loves skiing, rock climbing, judo and hiking. While training with her
ski team at Mt. Rose as a 14-year-old, Sophie was hit by a skier the day after Christmas in 2012. She
sustained a spinal cord injury to her T6-T7 vertebra. With an ever-present cheerful deposition, the
young Sophie applied for a grant from the Winter Empowerment Fund. A board-approved grant
provided Sophie with Acupuncture sessions and adaptive workouts at the CR Johnson Healing
Center with personal trainer Chris Cloyd.
Sophie’s goal is to be able to work again, and to return to skiing and the sports she loved while
growing up in the Sierra Nevada. Look for Sophie to continue on her inspirational road to recovery
each week at the CR Johnson Healing Center.
Cody Walker
Growing up with ski resorts in his backyard, Cody cultivated a love for snowboarding unlike any
other. In March 2013, while on a snowboarding trip in Lake Tahoe, Cody had a snowboarding
accident that left him with fractures in his neck, both hips and the inability to move his body on his
own. After several weeks Cody regained arm and leg movement and decided to take every action
possible to recover from this life-altering injury. The Winter Empowerment Fund provided Cody
with a board-approved grant for an increased stay at the University of Utah – Rehabilitation Center
as well as physical therapy and massage sessions.
Cody’s biggest goal (besides returning to the sport of snowboarding) was to be able to be fully
present in raising his three adorable children. Through a steadfast mindset Cody is reaching his
goals and more! His uplifting story can be seen in the video “The Cody Walker Story” on the High
Fives Foundation’s Vimeo channel.

7. Max Elles
On December 27, 2012 Max hit a hidden water bar while snowboarding at Killington Resort (VT). The promising young snowboarder
had suffered a burst fracture of his L1 vertebra. The Winter Empowerment Fund provided Max with a board-approved grant for
personal training, massage sessions, Acupuncture sessions, Structural Integration sessions as well as travel expenses for Pilates and
bodywork appointments.
Max has made a triumphant return to snowboarding, college, and his sticker business in addition to the many activities he enjoys on a
daily basis. His amazing story can be seen in the video “The Max Elles Story” on the High Fives Foundation’s Vimeo channel.

8. The #HelmetsAreCool video is a
26-minute documentary which is
the third installment (out of five)
that has been produced thus far in a
video series to illustrate the tenets of
the B.A.S.I.C.S. program service. The
previous two B.A.S.I.C.S. documentaries
inspired critical thinking regarding five
consequential mistakes that winter
action sports athletes have made before
suffering a life-altering injury; and
backcountry safety with a concentration
on avalanche awareness.
#HelmetsAreCool focuses on helmet
usage and safety while highlighting High
Fives Athlete, Pro-Snowboarder and
Truckee resident, Danny Toumarkine’s
recovery from a Traumatic Brain Injury
(TBI) he suffered while snowboarding
without a helmet. The powerful video
produced by Greg Martin and Nik David
(also Truckee residents) features three
other compelling accounts of athletes
that have suffered a TBI, even though
they were wearing a helmet while skiing
or snowboarding.
The goal set forth by the High Fives
Foundation is to reach 55,000 people
via views of the #HelmetsAreCool video
online and through presentations at
schools, academies and athletic clubs.
At the end of 2013, over 48,000 people
(both students and adults) have seen the
High Fives Foundation’s inspirational
presentation on the new documentary.

#Helmets Are Cool

9. Stimulating and innovative adaptive
workouts are taking place at the CR
Johnson Healing Center (located at
10775 Pioneer Trail, #108 in Truckee,
CA). The Healing Center provides
resources for athletes in recovery
from sport related injuries, which
include physical therapy, acupuncture,
massage, personal training and more. In
partnership with TRX Training and Chris
Cloyd (Fitness Director at Performance
Training Center), the CR Johnson Healing
Center has begun development of a new
form of adaptive workout; and the fitness
and adaptive communities are buzzing!
Categorized as an adaptive group
exercise program, these inspirational
classes (held weekly at the CR Johnson
Healing Center) are being designed
to cater to a group dynamic that lends
itself to adaptive participants to move
beyond what was previously thought
possible in a workout. Under Chris
Cloyd’s engaging direction, a new sense
of independence is being discovered for
High Fives Foundation Athletes that join
the classes, which largely focus on using
TRX Suspension and Rip Trainers.
Cloyd explains that through the
exercises he’s developed for the CR
Johnson Healing Center, “Athletes in a
wheelchair (or with otherwise limited
mobility) engage muscles in a way
that wasn’t previously accessible to
adaptive populations.” He continues
with a glow in his eye, “There’s no
precedent for this. I’ve never seen such
gains achieved by standard exercises.
Thanks to the program and tools (TRX
Training Equipment), I’m seeing these
athletes engaging an additional plane
of movement and ultimately they’re
seeing 30-35% additional muscle
improvement!”
The excitement is palpable as
participants are enthusiastic about the
new direction in their respective health
and fitness. Truckee resident Holly
McGowan at first did not think she could
do the workouts, but now proclaims
that they are “life changing”. On the
same token, High Fives Foundation –
Winter Empowerment Athlete Sophie
Courdurier hasn’t felt as strong since
before her injury.

10. On Saturday, September 28, 2013, the High Fives Foundation and the Hula Tribe combined to form the largest group to ever take on a
Tough Mudder event. The Tough Mudder (Tahoe Fall) event hosted over 12,000 competitors on a grueling 10-mile course at Northstar
California Resort. In a successful effort to raise funds for the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation, 50 Hula Tribe members marched to the
beat of two drums while outfitted in war paint and hula skirts on a sunny fall day in North Lake Tahoe.
Close to $40,000.00 was raised by members of the Hula Tribe (a team of like-minded individuals representing Hula Networks), proving
that the sky is the limit when you set goals and embrace positivity. The money raised supports a variety of High Fives Foundation
endeavors such as the purchase of rehabilitative and adaptive equipment as well as funding for alternative healing and therapies
through the Winter Empowerment Program.

The Tough Mudder Tahoe Fall event was a challenging course filled with 22 obstacles that the team worked together in a cohesive
effort to conquer. This unique fundraising campaign built camaraderie between the team while showcasing each team member’s
inspirational drive to accomplish goals on a unified front. The Hula Tribe 4 High Fives had High Fives Foundation Athlete Jake Hickman,
Director of Operations – Adam Baillargeon and Co-Founder Roy Tuscany along with Nitro Circus members Erik Roner and Rory
Bushfield among its 50 members.
“Four years ago, myself and a handful of close friends founded the Hula Tribe. This year our mission stood strong. We continued to charge
forward, helping spread the word of camaraderie while we raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. This year however, we joined forces
with the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation.” Say’s Hula Tribe’s Joe Commendatore “We’ve expanded our goals to include raising money and
awareness for the High Fives Foundation. On September 28 we saw to it that High Fives Co-Founder, Roy Tuscany, and High Fives Athlete Jake
Hickman completed the Tough Mudder course alongside the other members of the Hula Tribe. After having suffered a life-altering injury in a car
accident with my father in which both of our lives changed, I am very passionate about our fundraising efforts. The opportunity to help others in
the same shoes that I found myself in at 17 years old means the world to me.”
The Hula Tribe 4 High Fives top fundraiser was Joe Commendatore. Through his philanthropic efforts, Joe raised $11,259.00. To thank
him, the High Fives Foundation gifted Joe with a one-of-a-kind, Gibson Les Paul Guitar with a custom Volkl Shiro Skis graphic! This
amazing guitar was produced for fundraising through the partnership between Volkl Skis and the High Fives Foundation. Stay tuned for
the Tough Mudder 2014 (Tahoe Fall) event in which the Hula Tribe 4 High Fives aims to raise the bar, conquer the course and expand
the reach of this unique fundraiser’s possibilities.

Prom is a high-energy event with 1,000

Remember when skis were long and
straight? The Skinny Ski-A-Thon is a great

A golf tournament unlike any other, the
High Fives Annual Golf Tournament is a
great day on the greens at the Golf Club
at Gray’s Crossing in Truckee, California.
With 34 teams vying for top honors, a

this tournament helps the High Fives
Foundation continue to raise money and
awareness while giving its supporters a
chance to thoroughly enjoy themselves

The eclectic Truckee River Winery in

enthusiasts each year to compete for
bragging rights and glory in a friendly

The East Coast generally does not
experience as large of an annual snowfall
as found on the West Coast. That being
said, (fat) powder oriented skis are not
used on the slopes as frequently. Enter
the FAT Ski-A-Thon; a great chance
to join 100 High Fives supporters in a
friendly competition to raise money by
skiing as many laps as possible off of
Sugarbush Resort’s Summit Chairlift on
powder skis while having a great time!
The Kentucky de Mayo is an experience
unlike any other. Combining the classic
day of horseracing in the Kentucky Derby
with the festive celebration of Cinco de
Mayo, the Kentucky de Mayo is born. A
fun-filled evening at Game On! in Boston,
MA this day serves as a great way to
raise funds for the Foundation through
an amazing raffle and silent auctions.

In 2006, Roy Tuscany was lapping the park at California’s Mammoth Mountain, a familiar
playground for the 24-year-old freestyle ski coach. Growing up in Waterbury, Vt., he’d
spent his formative years chasing freeskiing legend John Egan around the slopes of
Sugarbush, but like many other East Coast college grads, Tuscany set his sights on the
steep terrain and deep snowpack only the West could offer.
As he’d done hundreds of times before, Tuscany launched off the first kicker and, in his usual
style, he went big. But this time, he went so big he overshot the landing and came crashing
back to earth, taking the full impact of the fall in his legs and back. His T12 vertebra was

SKI » How did you get injured?
R.T. » In 2006, I was a coach with the Sugar
Bowl Academy, and we were in Mammoth.
I made a mistake that morning and didn’t do
a speed check. I ended up overshooting a
feature and coming down from 30 feet in the
air. The impact felt as if my hips went through
my shoulders. The crash resulted in a T-12
burst fracture, causing me to be incompletely
paralyzed from the belly button down.

R.T. » It was a way for me to pay it forward.
During my recovery, I came to the realization
that there needed to be a group that helped
people who were not as fortunate to have the
support I received after my injury.
SKI » The athletes are so good now, you’ve
noted that they almost make it look too easy.
R.T. » The kids don’t realize how much these
high-level athletes train. It’s not a fluke that
someone does a cork five off a 50-foot cliff.
The pros, the media, us—we all need to do a
better job publicizing the training, preparation,
and professionalism that go into capturing a
big podium win or a big moment on film. It was
my fault for not doing a speed check that day.
High Fives wants to prevent that single mistake
that an athlete makes that causes a life-altering
injury. Education is huge for us.

R.T. » When kids turn 12, they want to rebel.
And the first thing they want to rebel against
is safety. You’ll never get an eight-year-old to
say, “Hey, Mom, check it out, my helmet is
safe.’” But you can get them to say, “Hey, mom,
check it out, my helmet looks cool.” It takes 45
seconds to put on your ski boots. It takes five
seconds to put on your helmet.

30. Five years…
It seems like just yesterday that Roy Tuscany asked me to join him for a meeting above (Secretary) Dana Greenwood’s garage at a house
he was renting in Truckee, CA. This meeting in 2008 lasted for several hours and many ideas were brought to the table. The main area
of focus at that time was how we were we going to make this thing called High Fives a reality. We knew next to nothing about the world
of non-profit organizations, but we believed in the mission and we shared Roy’s passion for paying forward the kindness and generous
support he received after his fateful day in Mammoth, CA in 2006.
Flash-forward to the current date and the High Fives Foundation has accomplished more than most people would expect. After
becoming an officially registered charitable organization with the state of California, what was once a dream has become a reality.
In 2009, Roy and I both stepped away from our previous jobs to take on the full-time responsibility of raising as much money for
injured winter sports athletes as possible. Maybe it’s the work ethic that was instilled in us by our parents, maybe it’s the community
of Truckee, CA and Lake Tahoe that welcomed a young non-profit with open arms or maybe it’s the reality that while the winter action
sports world continues to push the envelope of progression, more athletes are apt to suffer life-altering injuries. I believe all three of
these components are stimuli for the High Fives Foundation to continue to grow.
Along with working hard, having a community that supports your efforts and the inevitability of injury, there is a notion that the
non-profit world welcomes change. Change is good. The High Fives Foundation has shifted the paradigm of fundraising. By reading
this, you will hopefully understand the mantra that is echoed on a daily basis in referencing each event that the Foundation hosts, “We
emphasize the word FUN in every FUNdraiser, because the point is to have a good time AND raise money!”
As we navigate towards our goals in fundraising this year, there is a distinct feeling that every step the High Fives Foundation takes
comes with a renewed sense of purpose. This feeling is epitomized through the inspirational videos we produce which highlight various
High Fives Athletes’ respective stories of recovery. This feeling is echoed through the resoundingly positive feedback we receive from
all B.A.S.I.C.S. #HelmetsAreCool presentations. Lastly, the powerful healing that occurs through the daily offerings available at the CR
Johnson Healing Center embodies this feeling as well.
It is through continued support such as yours that the mission and vision of the High Foundation are brought before a larger audience
from coast to coast. Thank you very much for making it possible for Roy’s idea to pay forward the kindness and generosity he was
shown through the Foundation’s ability to change lives. Here’s to a great year full of High Fives!
