2. Whereas English has only “this” and “that”, Japanese has three separate
demonstrative pronouns: これ(kore), それ(sore), and あれ(are).
これ/kore (see ① above) indicates something near the speaker.
それ/sore (see ② above) something near the listener.
あれ/are (see ③ above) something not near either person.

Name of a thing は ∼えん です
“これ(kore), それ(sore), and あれ(are)” are demonstrative pronouns for things.
“は(wa)” is a particle used to indicate the topic of a sentence.
“です(desu)” is the predicate of an affirmative sentence.
wa en desu
これ／それ／あれ は です
kore sore are wa en desu
or
Prices in Japan we use えん／en as the Japan s currency which comes after the
number.
∼えん
デジカメ は 10,000えん です
。
。
dejikame wa ichiman en desu
。 The digital camera is 10,000 yen.
それ は 8,000えん です
sore wa hassen en desu
。 That is 8,000 yen.

Name of a thing 1 は ∼えん です
“も(mo)” is a particle that indicates that that item, too, has the given property.
wa en desu
これ／それ／あれ は です
kore sore are wa en desu
or
∼えん
デジカメ は 10,000えん です
。

dejikame wa ichiman en desu
。
The digital camera is 10,000 yen. The radio is 10,000 yen, too.
それ は 8,000えん です
sore wa hassen en desu
。
That is 8,000 yen. This is 8,000 yen, too.

5. Asking Prices 1
The predicate of an affirmative sentence “です／desu” plus a particle “か／ka”
makes the sentence question. However, this question sentence is a “yes/no”
question, thus the answer will be either “はい(hai)” or “いいえ(iie)”.

wa en desuka
これ／それ／あれ は
kore sore are wa en desuka

6. Asking Prices 2
Question sentences that ask prices may also contain a question word “いくら
(ikura)” means “how much”. Then answers should tell each particular price.
