We are a subsidiary of Helipro, one of New Zealand’s largest commercial helicopter and flight school companies.
Helipro’s fleet of both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft is the second largest in New Zealand, second only to Air New
Zealand. Helipro’s nine bases are situated throughout New Zealand and provide excellent opportunities for students to
get around the country, often with students piloting more complex machinery (under the watchful eye of an instructor)
from base to base as aircraft relocation requires. Each base has it’s own area of expertise and insofar as flight training
goes, one base offering fixed-wing training and two offer rotary wing training. Our size and experience mean we offer
a vast pool of opportunity and industry expertise to our students.
Bay Flight is based in Tauranga at Tauranga Airport. Tauranga Airport is of moderate size; it is not too busy nor
congested, yet is controlled. This, combined with the varied coastal and mountainous terrain makes Tauranga the
perfect place to learn to fly. We are lucky to have the beautiful Bay of Plenty at our doorstep and to the south the
stunning volcanic region of Rotorua & Taupo.
Our students are spoilt for choice: - your flying around here will never be boring!!
Bay Flight is well equipped with modern classrooms, projectors, briefing rooms, a map reading room, a student lounge
with couches and a staff room. We also have a Bar-b-que for social occasions. Our school is located on the Tauranga
airfield. There is a coffee shop/ cafe at the airport for which provides café food for hungry students and staff.
Modern facilities and up-to-date equipment ensure the flight training division of this commercial operation is well
abreast of technical advances employing GPS navigational tracking equipment on many of its aircraft to allow for
speedy aircraft location at the touch of a mouse button. With its own maintenance facility, aircraft are rarely on the
ground for long when any maintenance is required and engineers are never too far away to answer any technical
queries posed by inquisitive students.
As well as holding an Airline Air Operation Certificate, Bay Flight, as a subsidiary of Helipro, is certified to the ISO
9001:2008 and Qualmark Quality Standards. These are testament to our dedication to exceed expectation and offer a
safe, unique, and unforgettable level of service far beyond the normal industry standard. Bay Flight is also a signatory
to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. This means that we adhere to the highest
standards in our care of our students.
Please visit our website at www.bayflight.co.nz, or check out our facebook page, to find out more and to see what is
happening at Bay Flight.

If you want to work part-time when you are in New Zealand, you need to apply for a ‘Student Permit’. This can be done
in two ways; when you initially apply for your visa, or you can change your status once you are here. We recommend you
apply for a student permit before you come to New Zealand.
There are two types of visas you can apply for before you come to NZ:
1. Student Visa (form number INZ 1012): You cannot work on this visa. This visa costs you about $250
(please confirm this cost when you are about to apply).
2. Student Permit: You can work for up to 20 hours a week on this visa, and full-time during holiday periods,
such as over Christmas. You can apply for this when you initially apply for you visa by ticking the ‘student
permit’ box in section E1 on the application form. The reason you are applying for the permit will be so
Bay Flight you can work part time when you are here. If you apply for this with your initial application, the
cost will be about $250 (the same as the cost for a standard student visa)
It is generally easier for you to do this is your own country before you come here.
Follow this link to find out where the closest medical examiner is to you -
www.caa.govt.nz/Script/AMA_DME_OS.asp
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and
reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website
at -
www.immigration.govt.nz
Most International Students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive
medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of treatment. Full details on entitlements to
publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at -
www.moh.govt.nz
How to change your status once you are here:
If you arrive in NZ on a student visa and then decide you want to work, you will need to fill out a ‘Variation of Conditions’
form (form number INZ 1020). This will change your status and give you a student permit, which will enable you to
work part-time. This application will cost you $120 (over and above the $250 you have a already paid for the student
visa). You will also need to wait for up to six weeks for the variation in your conditions to come through.

Prior to travelling to New Zealand it is essential that applicants have secured appropriate medical and travel insurance
covering the duration of their stay in New Zealand. Insurance must be in place BEFORE a student begins a course. Bay
Flight recommends Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s ‘Student Essentials Plan’; many of our students have used this
plan and we have found it covers all the essentials. Please see -
www.scti.co.nz
Proof of cover is required as part of the enrolment process. Bay Flight will retain a record of the insurer and policy
number of all their students, which may be used in the event of an emergency. We keep a record of which insurance
policy each student has and the expiry date of that insurance.
Students are required to have medical and travel insurance. Generally, students should have combined travel and
medical insurance on one policy, but separate policies are permitted.
Your policy should:
• Commence the minute you leave home for the airport on your way to New Zealand
• Apply while in transit
• Apply while you are in New Zealand
• Cover you for any trips to other countries during the period of study
• Cover you for any holidays back to your home country during the period of study
When we enroll students who are already in New Zealand, we require proof of insurance prior to confirmation of
enrolment.

If purchasing cover through a New Zealand insurer you should purchase this cover at the same time as you pay your
fees and before you leave home, to cover you for unforeseen medical emergencies that could prevent you from coming
to New Zealand. Students already in New Zealand and enrolling for new courses are required to have insurance cover.
Insurance arrangements for students on short courses and group students must be checked prior to enrolment.
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and
temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information
can be viewed on the ACC website at -
www.acc.co.nz
It is recommended that international students arrive in New Zealand a few days prior to their course commencement
to ensure they acclimatise to the new time zone prior to starting their studies. If you are coming to us from elsewhere
in New Zealand, you might also plan to arrive a few days before your study begins. This will give you an opportunity to
look around Tauranga and to settle in to your accommodation. Before commencing studies, students will partake in
our orientation program. This program will introduce you to our country and culture, Bay Flight programs and facilities
and help to familiarise you with the local area and amenities, for example the banks and post offices. The Student
Welfare Officer will be available to offer any guidance and help make your transition into the community as smooth as
possible.
Bay Flight checks insurance policies, ensuring that:
The insurer/re-insurer is a reputable and established company with substantial experience in the travel insurance
business, and has an excellent credit rating. AAA is the highest credit rating. The credit rating should be no lower than
A from Standard and Poors, or B+ from A M Best.
• The insurer is able to provide emergency 24-hour, 7 day per week cover.
• You have a “certificate of currency” and policy wording from the insurance company stating that you have
purchased the cover for the duration of the planned period of study. The certificate and policy wording must
also detail medical sums insured, repatriation benefits etc. This is standard insurance practice to validate cover.
• If the insurer is an overseas company, Bay Flight will request you provide policy details in English in advance to
allow Bay Flight to ensure the policy meets our requirements.

Before arriving in New Zealand, you will have had contact with either the Student Welfare Officer or another delegated
person. Arrangements will have been made in advance to have someone meet you at the airport. We hope you will feel
relaxed after your journey and excited about studying aviation with us.
Upon arrival at your accommodation you will be shown around and advised of what will be happening. It is likely that
you will have a few days to acclimatise before you begin your course so this may be a good chance for you to meet
the other students and to have a look around the town. Within the first few days of being here, you should begin the
orientation program which will help familiarise you with the facilities in the town and our flight training centre at the
airport.
During orientation, you will also receive information on our company, including company policies and procedures. We
aim to make your time with us as enjoyable and rewarding as we possibly can. Below are some of the services we offer
and policies we have in place to ensure your studies go smoothly.
Bay Flight has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.
Copies of the Code are available from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at -
www.immigration.govt.nz

information, support and advice covering, but not limited to, the following:
• Courses

  • 3. www.bayflight.co.nz© 2013 Bay Flight We are a subsidiary of Helipro, one of New Zealand’s largest commercial helicopter and flight school companies. Helipro’s fleet of both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft is the second largest in New Zealand, second only to Air New Zealand. Helipro’s nine bases are situated throughout New Zealand and provide excellent opportunities for students to get around the country, often with students piloting more complex machinery (under the watchful eye of an instructor) from base to base as aircraft relocation requires. Each base has it’s own area of expertise and insofar as flight training goes, one base offering fixed-wing training and two offer rotary wing training. Our size and experience mean we offer a vast pool of opportunity and industry expertise to our students. Bay Flight is based in Tauranga at Tauranga Airport. Tauranga Airport is of moderate size; it is not too busy nor congested, yet is controlled. This, combined with the varied coastal and mountainous terrain makes Tauranga the perfect place to learn to fly. We are lucky to have the beautiful Bay of Plenty at our doorstep and to the south the stunning volcanic region of Rotorua & Taupo. Our students are spoilt for choice: - your flying around here will never be boring!! Bay Flight is well equipped with modern classrooms, projectors, briefing rooms, a map reading room, a student lounge with couches and a staff room. We also have a Bar-b-que for social occasions. Our school is located on the Tauranga airfield. There is a coffee shop/ cafe at the airport for which provides café food for hungry students and staff. Modern facilities and up-to-date equipment ensure the flight training division of this commercial operation is well abreast of technical advances employing GPS navigational tracking equipment on many of its aircraft to allow for speedy aircraft location at the touch of a mouse button. With its own maintenance facility, aircraft are rarely on the ground for long when any maintenance is required and engineers are never too far away to answer any technical queries posed by inquisitive students. As well as holding an Airline Air Operation Certificate, Bay Flight, as a subsidiary of Helipro, is certified to the ISO 9001:2008 and Qualmark Quality Standards. These are testament to our dedication to exceed expectation and offer a safe, unique, and unforgettable level of service far beyond the normal industry standard. Bay Flight is also a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. This means that we adhere to the highest standards in our care of our students. Please visit our website at www.bayflight.co.nz, or check out our facebook page, to find out more and to see what is happening at Bay Flight. COMPANY OVERVIEW Learn to fly with Bay Flight Tauranga! 1

  • 9. www.bayflight.co.nz© 2013 Bay Flight If you want to work part-time when you are in New Zealand, you need to apply for a ‘Student Permit’. This can be done in two ways; when you initially apply for your visa, or you can change your status once you are here. We recommend you apply for a student permit before you come to New Zealand. There are two types of visas you can apply for before you come to NZ: 1. Student Visa (form number INZ 1012): You cannot work on this visa. This visa costs you about $250 (please confirm this cost when you are about to apply). 2. Student Permit: You can work for up to 20 hours a week on this visa, and full-time during holiday periods, such as over Christmas. You can apply for this when you initially apply for you visa by ticking the ‘student permit’ box in section E1 on the application form. The reason you are applying for the permit will be so Bay Flight you can work part time when you are here. If you apply for this with your initial application, the cost will be about $250 (the same as the cost for a standard student visa) It is generally easier for you to do this is your own country before you come here. Follow this link to find out where the closest medical examiner is to you - www.caa.govt.nz/Script/AMA_DME_OS.asp Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at - www.immigration.govt.nz Most International Students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at - www.moh.govt.nz How to change your status once you are here: If you arrive in NZ on a student visa and then decide you want to work, you will need to fill out a ‘Variation of Conditions’ form (form number INZ 1020). This will change your status and give you a student permit, which will enable you to work part-time. This application will cost you $120 (over and above the $250 you have a already paid for the student visa). You will also need to wait for up to six weeks for the variation in your conditions to come through. • 10. www.bayflight.co.nz© 2013 Bay Flight Prior to travelling to New Zealand it is essential that applicants have secured appropriate medical and travel insurance covering the duration of their stay in New Zealand. Insurance must be in place BEFORE a student begins a course. Bay Flight recommends Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s ‘Student Essentials Plan’; many of our students have used this plan and we have found it covers all the essentials. Please see - www.scti.co.nz Proof of cover is required as part of the enrolment process. Bay Flight will retain a record of the insurer and policy number of all their students, which may be used in the event of an emergency. We keep a record of which insurance policy each student has and the expiry date of that insurance. Students are required to have medical and travel insurance. Generally, students should have combined travel and medical insurance on one policy, but separate policies are permitted. Your policy should: • Commence the minute you leave home for the airport on your way to New Zealand • Apply while in transit • Apply while you are in New Zealand • Cover you for any trips to other countries during the period of study • Cover you for any holidays back to your home country during the period of study When we enroll students who are already in New Zealand, we require proof of insurance prior to confirmation of enrolment. GETTING A VISA TO STUDY IN NEW ZEALAND Insurance Start Of Cover 8 WBay Flight We Require In Your Policy • Loss of baggage and other personal effects • Medical expenses, including emergency dental treatment • Accident and injury • Cost of medical care in any “stopover” countries. • Evacuation and Repatriation Travel Component: You should be covered for... • 11. www.bayflight.co.nz© 2013 Bay Flight If purchasing cover through a New Zealand insurer you should purchase this cover at the same time as you pay your fees and before you leave home, to cover you for unforeseen medical emergencies that could prevent you from coming to New Zealand. Students already in New Zealand and enrolling for new courses are required to have insurance cover. Insurance arrangements for students on short courses and group students must be checked prior to enrolment. The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at - www.acc.co.nz It is recommended that international students arrive in New Zealand a few days prior to their course commencement to ensure they acclimatise to the new time zone prior to starting their studies. If you are coming to us from elsewhere in New Zealand, you might also plan to arrive a few days before your study begins. This will give you an opportunity to look around Tauranga and to settle in to your accommodation. Before commencing studies, students will partake in our orientation program. This program will introduce you to our country and culture, Bay Flight programs and facilities and help to familiarise you with the local area and amenities, for example the banks and post offices. The Student Welfare Officer will be available to offer any guidance and help make your transition into the community as smooth as possible. Bay Flight checks insurance policies, ensuring that: The insurer/re-insurer is a reputable and established company with substantial experience in the travel insurance business, and has an excellent credit rating. AAA is the highest credit rating. The credit rating should be no lower than A from Standard and Poors, or B+ from A M Best. • The insurer is able to provide emergency 24-hour, 7 day per week cover. • You have a “certificate of currency” and policy wording from the insurance company stating that you have purchased the cover for the duration of the planned period of study. The certificate and policy wording must also detail medical sums insured, repatriation benefits etc. This is standard insurance practice to validate cover. • If the insurer is an overseas company, Bay Flight will request you provide policy details in English in advance to allow Bay Flight to ensure the policy meets our requirements. • 12. www.bayflight.co.nz© 2013 Bay Flight You can contact us through our website www.bayflight.co.nz, or by emailing us at enquiries@bayflight.co.nz to register your interest. We will then contact you to answer any of your questions, to tell you when our next intake is and/or help you to enroll. There is an enrolment steps guide, which if you have not received it with this handbook, you can request. You should also have received a Student Application Form. Please complete the application form, attaching the required information, and scan or email it through to enquiries@bayflight.co.nz. There are various accommodation options available to students who chose to study with Bay Flight. Options vary from a nearby boarding house, guest houses, shared flatting (where you rent a house with other students) and homestays. Prices range from around NZ$100 to $200 per week depending on what type of accommodation you prefer. Please contact us at enquiries@bayflight.co.nz to find out more and to discuss the various options. Most students stay in the nearby boarding hostel when they first arrive – please let us know when you are arriving and we can book a room for you. GETTING A VISA TO STUDY IN NEW ZEALAND Guide To Enrolling At Bay Flight Accommodation 10
  • 13. www.bayflight.co.nz© 2013 Bay Flight Before arriving in New Zealand, you will have had contact with either the Student Welfare Officer or another delegated person. Arrangements will have been made in advance to have someone meet you at the airport. We hope you will feel relaxed after your journey and excited about studying aviation with us. Upon arrival at your accommodation you will be shown around and advised of what will be happening. It is likely that you will have a few days to acclimatise before you begin your course so this may be a good chance for you to meet the other students and to have a look around the town. Within the first few days of being here, you should begin the orientation program which will help familiarise you with the facilities in the town and our flight training centre at the airport. During orientation, you will also receive information on our company, including company policies and procedures. We aim to make your time with us as enjoyable and rewarding as we possibly can. Below are some of the services we offer and policies we have in place to ensure your studies go smoothly. Bay Flight has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Copies of the Code are available from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at - www.immigration.govt.nz The Student Welfare Officer is the first point of call for all students experiencing difficulties or requiring help or support. The Student Welfare Officer or his/her representative will be contactable by cell-phone during normal working hours (8am to 5pm – 7 days a week) for general enquiries and 24 hours a day for emergency calls (it is requested that the 24 hour contact is only used for situations that will not wait until the following day). The Student Welfare Officer has the responsibility of ensuring the welfare of the student and will be able to provide information, support and advice covering, but not limited to, the following: • Courses • Accommodation • New Zealand Laws, including laws on the sale of alcohol and tobacco • Safety • Welfare facilities, including personal health services, mental health services and counseling • Harassment & Discrimination • Advocacy procedures In the event that the issues are beyond the scope of the Student Welfare Officer, the student may approach the company Base Manager/CFI or CEO for further consultation or follow the company grievance procedure.
