             A Bird’s Eye View
Hi. I am Spidgey. I am one of the many sky dwellers hovering over the scenic
hills of Lavale. My fellow fliers tell me that this place is the residential
campus of a top B school but truly speaking, it appears more like a hill
station to me. The brainy creatures here who they call students have a ball
of a time on this campus.

Getting a bird’s eye view is a lot of fun at SIBM Pune. You would find me
looking at you through the window panes of classrooms when the classes
are going on, in the canteen where students grab a quick bite so that they
do not miss their lectures, at the coffee shop and chaatwala where students
flock like us birds, near the hostels and the recreation center where students head to after college
hours. Life is truly amazing at the picturesque SIBM Pune campus.

With such an environment here, there is no doubt that this is the place where business leaders truly
evolve. Established in 1978, SIBM Pune is the flagship management institute of the Symbiosis
International University. SIBM Pune started out 33 years ago and is now counted amongst the leading B-
schools in India. SIBM Pune has also been consistently ranked among the best B-schools in India.
Combining theory with practical business, classroom teaching with Management Development
Programmes, SIBM Pune offers its students a powerful mix of academic and contemporary business
knowledge.

Did You Know?? Ratio of Work Experience Students to Freshers at SIBM Pune is 60:40
As I was sitting outside the Director’s cabin, here’s what I could hear. Perhaps, it is a message to all
those of you, who are aspiring to be a part of this institute.

                                      Dear aspiring students,

As you are applying for SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test) to be
held on 19th December, 2010 and have given SIBM Pune as a preferred
institute, I welcome you to the list of more than 50,000 students who
                                     want to enter SIBM Pune.

At SIBM Pune, I assure you of an academic environment supported by lots
of students driven activities. Ours is the only institute which offers
specialization in fields of Marketing, HR, Finance and Operations within
the first 45 days of enrolment. This gives competitive advantage to our
students at the time of summer placements. During these first 45 days,
beginning with 7th June 2011, students will be given in-depth knowledge
of the above functional areas so that they make an informed choice for
                                           specialization.

We provide value-added courses such as Econometrics, Stock Market
Operations and Business Simulation exercises with a special input on
Indian Corporate sector which is rarely taught anywhere else.

We have a known track record of 100% placements. Our summer
placements conversion into final job offers is one of the highest.

Also, there is an outbound learning program organized every year.

So, Dear students, all the best for your SNAP test. REMEMBER THAT THE
SIBM CUT OFF IS ALWAYS THE HIGHEST. So work hard for it.
Infrastructure
Situated 16 kms from the city of Pune, 2,200 feet above sea level across 300 acres of land, the students
here say that studying in this place is truly an exhilarating experience.

                   Classroom Library

Did you Know?? SIBM Pune campus is a fully Wi-Fi enabled campus
Here is what the brainy creature’s a.k.a students have to say about the campus and infrastructure of the
college.

                                  Varenya Vadlamani, MBA I (Finance)

The infrastructure at SIBM Pune is definitely one of the most
breathtaking features here, second only to the view from my
window. My favorite infrastructural feature is the amphitheater.
The exhilarating view from the Amphitheatre at night will
definitely be one of those things that I will cherish forever. All the
nights spent listening to songs and singing there will be at the
forefront of my memories at SIBM Pune.

For a first timer living away from home, SIBM Pune offers a „home
away from home‟ experience. The hostels are very well equipped
with easily accessible drinking water, hot water for the rooms and a
common TV room. The simple little things that are done to make us
feel at home sometimes tend to overwhelm me. From the
complimentary midnight chai given during exams to the special
shuttle buses to the city, SIBM Pune definitely goes the extra mile
                                           to make us comfortable.

The campus also offers great recreational facilities. The cricket and
football grounds, basketball court, table tennis, squash courts and
tennis courts are absolutely world class. But of course, the hectic
course doesn‟t allow us to use them too much.

The amphitheater style classrooms equipped with projectors and
sounds systems give us a truly professional experience in class.
Learning in SIBM Pune is a continuous process and our surroundings
help us to make the most of it!
Shawn Francis, MBA I (Finance)

Life at SIBM Pune can be really hectic, even though we live amongst
the clouds on beautiful hill in a 300 acre campus. My day starts
early in the morning when I head to the gymnasium. There is the
option of playing either a game of table tennis or pool or a session
of aerobics in the recreation center. The remaining part of the day
is taken up by lectures and assignments, brainstorming sessions,
quizzes and the likes. After a long day, the guys unwind by playing
a game of football under the flood lights and some of the girls
enjoy a swim in the pool or play foosball. Many a time, movies are
played in the auditorium which provides a breather from the hectic
schedule, which comprises of studies and various competitions.
That is life at SIBM Pune. Fast paced and fun. But more
importantly, one in which you have the satisfaction of going to bed,
knowing that today you are a little bit better today than what you
                            were yesterday.
Strong Foundation of a rising dream
This institute attracts students from diverse educational backgrounds from across the world. In order to
bring all of them on a common platform, they undergo a Pre-induction course before joining. The pre-
induction courseware helps them gain solid ground in the basics of subjects to which they have not been
exposed to earlier. Thus, engineers are thorough with the basics of economics and accounting whereas
commerce graduates are well-versed with the fundamentals of statistics by the time regular classes
start. .Some courses are also made available to the students on the institute’s intranet. The students
thus get ample opportunity to supplement their classroom learning with self-reading in the form of e-
learning through these courses.

Unceasing Quest for Knowledge
In their quest for knowledge, the students here arrange symposia on different subjects and invite
eminent speakers to deliver lectures. These events benefit both the professionals and students by the
exchange of thoughts during these seminars and lectures. Some of the events organized by the students
are as follows:

Alpaviram- Contemplating Vision 2020

Inaugurated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, Alpaviram –Contemplating Vision 2020
was organized by the Corporate Interface Team at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune.
The event is about Vision 2020 set for the country by the former president himself. As we are only a
decade away from the year 2020, Alpaviram signifies a pause; a pause to take a stock of the current
situation and what needs to be done to achieve vision 2020.

Transcend

Transcend is SIBM Pune's annual cultural extravaganza. Students from various management institutes
compete in diverse competitions ranging from ad making and fashion shows to case studies and quizzes.
It is a colorful event where a sense of camaraderie prevails and everyone has a gala time.

cities and reach out to aspirants by helping them in choosing the right career path. The aspirants also

Mahim Mongia, MBA II (Human Resources)

A career in HR can be one of the most challenging, with a
tremendous scope for faster growth in a growing competitive economy.

While technology, systems and strategies can be easily replicated,
human capital is difficult to replace and hence the fight for talent in the
Indian industry. The talent pool of an organization and its HR systems
enable effective implementation of strategy. These HR systems broadly
include all stages of employee lifecycle right from recruitment, selection,
induction to training and development, performance management,
compensation, industrial and employee relations. An HR strategy
comprising of these systems is then aligned to the business strategy.

To enable this strategy, capable professionals are required and hence an
institute like SIBM Pune; whose HR specialization is considered by the
industry to be among the top 3 courses ( along with XLRI and TISS) in
                                India; grooms future HR leaders.

This is further validated by the large number of SIBM Pune alumni in HR
leadership positions across global organizations. Highly experienced
faculty imparting practical exposure, live projects, industry ready
syllabus, workshops and lectures by industry experts- these things add to
the solid foundation companies look for in HR managers. An excellent
placement with varied profiles is then an obvious outcome of a rigorous
                                       yet fun-filled course.

The older administration-intensive HR is giving way to the new strategic-
value add HR. This era has no scope for past apprehensions like HR
managers not becoming CEOs. HR as a profession is continuously evolving
and so by choosing HR in SIBM Pune, you can be a part of that change.
Ashish Chabbra, MBA II (Marketing)

Many would contend, the basis for marketing is the 4 Ps by Philip
Kotler, but, for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the field,
one more „P‟ is needed, that is, Passion. Marketing in simple words is
about knowing the pulse of the customer- about how you know what
to offer, how to communicate with them and how best to deliver
                     results in terms of revenue.

An important aspect in the study of the beautiful subject is the
dynamic nature of the consumer preference, acceptance and taste.
So, the study is ever evolving and thus more interesting continually.
Figuratively speaking, it is about having your ear to the ground and
eyes to the sky, all the time! A successful marketer is not just
reactive to the competitor‟s activities, but, also proactive to ensure
the first mover‟s advantage is made full use of.

Marketing at SIBM Pune in particular is one of the best decisions that
I personally took. Here learning takes place through various mediums
to ensure that the understanding is consistent with what is intended.
The experienced faculty, both in-house and from the corporate, use
a mix of methodologies, from handholding at the formative stage,
to, throwing you in the deep sea- as the grades depend upon the live
               market based assignments and projects.

Apart from the field and off-field assignments, corporate projects
are available for students to apply to, and provide ample
opportunity to learn and win accolades.

The well-stocked library and the online databases available on the
campus bring the opportunities to learn, to another level altogether.
This is exceedingly well complemented with real life cases and
experiences shared by the faculty who have spent enough time in the
industry to supplement the lessons with anecdotes of their own.
Kedar Bothe, MBA II (Operations)

students a feel of the financial world. Be it interaction with

A Student Driven Institute
SIBM Pune takes great pride in being a student-centric institute. Students here are entrusted with
resources and responsibilities early on in their academic career. They are encouraged to take important
administrative and policy decisions that sculpt their future and that of the Institute. This facilitates their
all-round development over and above academic performance. The Students' Council is one such
student body responsible and accountable for numerous activities on the campus throughout the year.
What follows below is a brief description of what each team in the Students’ Council does.

The Alumni Team (AT) maintains the crucial link between the Institute and the 31 batches of
management professionals that it has produced over the years. It ensures constant and fruitful
interaction with the 4700+ strong alumni while at the same time strengthening their bond with their
alma mater. In addition to annual reunions, the team organizes alumni meets and dinners across the
country to initiate and encourage communication among the alumni.

The Aspirant Relations Team (ART) is the student interface for those aspiring to join the Institute. With
wide ranging activities like iAspire - the online portal, nationwide brand building campaigns, career
counseling sessions like Coffee With SIBM, Sizzlers & Silhouettes, online buddy programs and help lines,
it aims to make the transition to student life at SIBM Pune smoother. B-Quizzed @ SIBM is a National
Level Business Quiz conceptualized by ART, aimed at all undergraduate (UG) students and MBA aspirants
to provide them with a glimpse of the Business World. The ART is also responsible for designing and
executing the entire admissions process.

The Corporate Interface Team (CIT) facilitates the interaction between the students and the corporate
world and augments the knowledge base of the students by establishing educative and beneficial
interaction between the two sides. Through various guest lectures and corporate interactions that are
conducted regularly, the team ensures that the students are always updated with the trends in the
industry.

The Co-Curricular Team (Co-CT) encourages and nurtures the overall development of personality and
character in the students and also encourages them to participate in various management and cultural
events in B-Schools across India. Through its events and activities, the team ensures that there is never a
dull day in the life of an SIBM Pune student.

The Information Technology Team (ITT) harnesses the full potential of IT to assist efficient knowledge
dissemination to the students. It is responsible for procuring software and imparting training in tune
with the latest industry trends.

The Placement Advisory Team (PAT) focuses on securing the best summer internships and job
opportunities for every student in the Institute. It has broken records year after year to bring the most
respected companies on campus to ensure the skills and talent of the students are well aligned with the
profile offered.
Research and Scholastic Development Team (RSDT) looks at identifying, conceptualizing, and executing
research projects that have the potential to contribute to the ever changing landscape of business
management.

Centre for Excellence (CFE) is a student’s driven initiative to provide consultancy to Self Help Groups and
help them overcome their shortcomings related to financial, marketing and operational activities. The
students thus handle immense responsibilities as their recommendations affect the livelihood of the
SHG members. CFE is working on GI (Geographical Indication) registration for Paithani Sarees and is also
an exclusive consulting and training partner for the Yashaswini Abhiyaan run by MP MrsSupriya Sule.
I have tweeted something below I overheard while I was sitting on one of the window panes of a
Students’ Council team room.

                               Nitin Prabhu, MBA II (Operations)

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears”, goes an old adage. You
never know how and when you learn things. All that is necessary is a
                                     willingness to learn.

The Students‟ Council at SIBM Pune has been one such experience for me.
Having only heard about its activities earlier, I had the first tryst with its
activities when I, as an aspirant attended the Admissions Process. I was so
overwhelmed by the experience that I at once wanted to be a part of the
Council, should I make it to the institute.

The great part of the Students‟ Council here is that you are given total
freedom in planning, designing and executing important events and
activities of the institute like Placements, Admissions, Corporate
Interactions, Institute Branding, Guest Lectures etc... With timely inputs
and guidance from able faculty members, it is a great learning
experience. It allows you to practically apply most of your theoretical
learning in classes. And what is more important is that you are
encouraged to learn from the mistakes that might happen.

The most important take away from being in the council is it
inadvertently grooms you well to take on responsibilities and proactively
look out for opportunities and make the best use of them. The constant
brain storming sessions, the intense detailing in the planning, working on
contingencies, the innumerous night outs for ensuring the success of the
events have all left us with sweet memories and a great set of colleagues
who have become good friends now. In short, being a part of the Council
has made us well equipped to handle the demands of the Corporate
                                             World.
Placements - Challenges Await You
Since its inception, this institute has had an impeccable track record of placements. Students undergo
screening tests and proficiency tests regularly in the first and second year of their MBA programme as a
precursor to the placement season. Weekly Business Awareness Tests (BAT) are conducted to aid
preparations for the Summer Internship Recruitment Program (SIRP). Similarly, Corporate Awareness
Tests (CAT) and Domain Tests are conducted weekly to aid Campus Recruitment Program (CRP)
preparations. In addition to these, exclusive Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews are
conducted for the students to help them with their placement preparations.

      Summer Internships

On completion of two semesters of dedicated educational endeavor, students secure a two-month
project with a business organization. This industry exposure helps them bridge the gap between
classroom learning and market realities. Feedback from the respective organization helps students
identify their strengths as well as areas of improvement.

Student Diaries

Now, you may find it a little difficult to believe all that I have told you. After all I’m just a bird. But this is
what some of the students studying here have to say.

                                     Karan Shah, MBA I (Marketing)

The first thing that attracted me to SIBM Pune was its campus set
amidst the hills of Lavale near Pune, breathtaking is a word that frails
in comparison to the sheer beauty of the environs here. But after
having spent about two quarters (MBA-speak) here I have found many
things that I love about this institute; be it the student-driven culture,
the amazing opportunities for learning, the superior facilities for
recreation or the unique people that I‟ve met. It is usually the people
that define your experience of an academic institute and SIBM Pune
has not disappointed. I have learnt more here, over a cup of chai,
bouncing ideas around with a trusted group of friends than anywhere
else. The synergy of teamwork that I‟ve experienced here is
unparalleled. The faculty here goes beyond their traditional roles as
facilitators and actively mentor students to achieve greater success.
All this combined with a visionary Director who has instituted many
positive changes makes me sure that my life at SIBM Pune would be
continue to be an enriching experience.
Vaishnavi Nayel, MBA I (Marketing)

A new chapter of my life began on 7th June 2010; it marked the
start of my journey at SIBM Pune. It will always be one of the most
significant and memorable segments of my life and one that I know
I will come to read and reread in the years to come.

I remember the day I stepped into the portals of SIBM Pune with my
parents, brother and luggage in tow. It was a sunny afternoon in
early June and there was a whirlwind of exhilaration and
anxiousness brewing within me. I had spent my summer envisaging
life at SIBM Pune and since it was the first time I would be living
away from home, I was giddy with excitement at the idea of
                             campus life.

In the first week, I met more people than I can remember,
courtesy: the coffee shop. Soon we were inundated in assignments,
foundation tests and presentations. Classes were engaging and kept
us on our toes. I joined the Corporate Interface Team, and was
involved in a variety of activities throughout the semester. Then,
along came Transloocent, our inter-class fest. Waking up at dawn to
practice for cultural events, lining up by the poolside to watch
relays in the evenings and lobbying for each of our classes created a
                  remarkable bonhomie amongst us.

I‟m just a semester old at SIBM Pune but it truly feels like home,
and still my chapter has many a page that need penning. But I‟ve
got one and a half years left, and you know what, I have a feeling
my ink might just run out!
Sarah Matthews, MBA I (Human Resource)

B-schools are a universe of the never-seen, whether you are a quasi-
teenager or a 6 year working veteran. SIBM Pune is a portal to
learning, experience and glory you wouldn‟t get elsewhere. As a
student at this premier institute, this is my attempt to give you an
inside view of life within this beautiful campus.

SIBM Pune offers an opportunity and not schooling. I have learnt so
much more than can be absorbed from books in this institute. The
methodology of teaching that is followed gives me a chance to broaden
my thinking and look at every aspect of the problem presented.

The enlightening talks of peers, corporate big wig‟s seminars,
obscenely difficult case studies, insane night outs, cut throat
competition etc. are all a part of the experience that I have had as a
part of this college. There is always the „short-of-time‟ syndrome, but
hey, that is what management is all about.

Being a part of such an eclectic crowd and working in a team with
people who are brimming with ideas, an experience that only SIBM
                            Pune can offer.

                  Sonali Deshmukh, MBA I (Finance)

Coming to SIBM isn‟t just about getting an MBA degree. It‟s about the
whole process of getting to your graduation day. And it‟s one helluva
ride! It simply invades your life. My time here has been a frantic and
immensely enjoyable melee of activities… making friends, rushing to
class, submissions, deadlines, brainstorming and what not. These are
the times when you learn about camaraderie, teamwork, meeting
deadlines, eating late, sleeping even later, and fighting with friends…
And you become addicted to this way of life, which makes you sound
professional and a gem of a friend.
Niket Khaitan, MBA I (Finance)

Challenging my thinking, that‟s probably what I‟m doing most of the
time at SIBM Pune. Life here is as simple as the process of unlearning
and learning, constantly. The breath-taking location and brilliant
infrastructure act as catalysts and give us an unfair advantage in this
                         process of learning.

Academics at SIBM Pune are rigorous to say the least and that‟s for a
good reason. We believe that a framework for questioning current
management practices can only be built on a foundation of strong
academics. The pedagogy at SIBM Pune is built around the principles
of experienced teachers, open ended teaching, and the nurturing of
                            argument.

SIBM Pune strongly believes in the all-round development of its
students and has arguably the best sports complex of any b-school in
the country. All in all, the brilliance of the students, provoked by the
best of teachers, and aided by an awe-inspiring campus results in an
                   MBA experience worth dying for.

SIBM Pune campus bird's eye view

  • 1. Symbiosis institute of business management pune A Bird’s Eye View
  • 2. Hi. I am Spidgey. I am one of the many sky dwellers hovering over the scenic hills of Lavale. My fellow fliers tell me that this place is the residential campus of a top B school but truly speaking, it appears more like a hill station to me. The brainy creatures here who they call students have a ball of a time on this campus. Getting a bird’s eye view is a lot of fun at SIBM Pune. You would find me looking at you through the window panes of classrooms when the classes are going on, in the canteen where students grab a quick bite so that they do not miss their lectures, at the coffee shop and chaatwala where students flock like us birds, near the hostels and the recreation center where students head to after college hours. Life is truly amazing at the picturesque SIBM Pune campus. With such an environment here, there is no doubt that this is the place where business leaders truly evolve. Established in 1978, SIBM Pune is the flagship management institute of the Symbiosis International University. SIBM Pune started out 33 years ago and is now counted amongst the leading B- schools in India. SIBM Pune has also been consistently ranked among the best B-schools in India. Combining theory with practical business, classroom teaching with Management Development Programmes, SIBM Pune offers its students a powerful mix of academic and contemporary business knowledge. Did You Know?? Ratio of Work Experience Students to Freshers at SIBM Pune is 60:40
  • 3. As I was sitting outside the Director’s cabin, here’s what I could hear. Perhaps, it is a message to all those of you, who are aspiring to be a part of this institute. Dear aspiring students, As you are applying for SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test) to be held on 19th December, 2010 and have given SIBM Pune as a preferred institute, I welcome you to the list of more than 50,000 students who want to enter SIBM Pune. At SIBM Pune, I assure you of an academic environment supported by lots of students driven activities. Ours is the only institute which offers specialization in fields of Marketing, HR, Finance and Operations within the first 45 days of enrolment. This gives competitive advantage to our students at the time of summer placements. During these first 45 days, beginning with 7th June 2011, students will be given in-depth knowledge of the above functional areas so that they make an informed choice for specialization. We provide value-added courses such as Econometrics, Stock Market Operations and Business Simulation exercises with a special input on Indian Corporate sector which is rarely taught anywhere else. We have a known track record of 100% placements. Our summer placements conversion into final job offers is one of the highest. Also, there is an outbound learning program organized every year. So, Dear students, all the best for your SNAP test. REMEMBER THAT THE SIBM CUT OFF IS ALWAYS THE HIGHEST. So work hard for it.
  • 4. Infrastructure Situated 16 kms from the city of Pune, 2,200 feet above sea level across 300 acres of land, the students here say that studying in this place is truly an exhilarating experience. Classroom Library Boys’ Hostel Cafeteria Swimming Pool Badminton Courts Did you Know?? SIBM Pune campus is a fully Wi-Fi enabled campus
  • 5. Here is what the brainy creature’s a.k.a students have to say about the campus and infrastructure of the college. Varenya Vadlamani, MBA I (Finance) The infrastructure at SIBM Pune is definitely one of the most breathtaking features here, second only to the view from my window. My favorite infrastructural feature is the amphitheater. The exhilarating view from the Amphitheatre at night will definitely be one of those things that I will cherish forever. All the nights spent listening to songs and singing there will be at the forefront of my memories at SIBM Pune. For a first timer living away from home, SIBM Pune offers a „home away from home‟ experience. The hostels are very well equipped with easily accessible drinking water, hot water for the rooms and a common TV room. The simple little things that are done to make us feel at home sometimes tend to overwhelm me. From the complimentary midnight chai given during exams to the special shuttle buses to the city, SIBM Pune definitely goes the extra mile to make us comfortable. The campus also offers great recreational facilities. The cricket and football grounds, basketball court, table tennis, squash courts and tennis courts are absolutely world class. But of course, the hectic course doesn‟t allow us to use them too much. The amphitheater style classrooms equipped with projectors and sounds systems give us a truly professional experience in class. Learning in SIBM Pune is a continuous process and our surroundings help us to make the most of it!
  • 6. Shawn Francis, MBA I (Finance) Life at SIBM Pune can be really hectic, even though we live amongst the clouds on beautiful hill in a 300 acre campus. My day starts early in the morning when I head to the gymnasium. There is the option of playing either a game of table tennis or pool or a session of aerobics in the recreation center. The remaining part of the day is taken up by lectures and assignments, brainstorming sessions, quizzes and the likes. After a long day, the guys unwind by playing a game of football under the flood lights and some of the girls enjoy a swim in the pool or play foosball. Many a time, movies are played in the auditorium which provides a breather from the hectic schedule, which comprises of studies and various competitions. That is life at SIBM Pune. Fast paced and fun. But more importantly, one in which you have the satisfaction of going to bed, knowing that today you are a little bit better today than what you were yesterday.
  • 7. Strong Foundation of a rising dream This institute attracts students from diverse educational backgrounds from across the world. In order to bring all of them on a common platform, they undergo a Pre-induction course before joining. The pre- induction courseware helps them gain solid ground in the basics of subjects to which they have not been exposed to earlier. Thus, engineers are thorough with the basics of economics and accounting whereas commerce graduates are well-versed with the fundamentals of statistics by the time regular classes start. .Some courses are also made available to the students on the institute’s intranet. The students thus get ample opportunity to supplement their classroom learning with self-reading in the form of e- learning through these courses. Unceasing Quest for Knowledge In their quest for knowledge, the students here arrange symposia on different subjects and invite eminent speakers to deliver lectures. These events benefit both the professionals and students by the exchange of thoughts during these seminars and lectures. Some of the events organized by the students are as follows: Alpaviram- Contemplating Vision 2020 Inaugurated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, Alpaviram –Contemplating Vision 2020 was organized by the Corporate Interface Team at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune. The event is about Vision 2020 set for the country by the former president himself. As we are only a decade away from the year 2020, Alpaviram signifies a pause; a pause to take a stock of the current situation and what needs to be done to achieve vision 2020. Transcend Transcend is SIBM Pune's annual cultural extravaganza. Students from various management institutes compete in diverse competitions ranging from ad making and fashion shows to case studies and quizzes. It is a colorful event where a sense of camaraderie prevails and everyone has a gala time. Coffee with SIBM Coffee with SIBM is a unique mentorship program for MBA aspirants. SIBM Pune students visit various cities and reach out to aspirants by helping them in choosing the right career path. The aspirants also interact with the students and gain an insight into the institute. Last year, this initiative was conducted by the Aspirant Relations Team of the Students’ Council in 18 cities. Did you Know?? The classes are designed amphitheatre style, which means it becomes very difficult to sleep in class

  • 13. This is what the students studying at SIBM Pune in different specializations have to say about their experiences so far in their respective specialization. Mahim Mongia, MBA II (Human Resources) A career in HR can be one of the most challenging, with a tremendous scope for faster growth in a growing competitive economy. While technology, systems and strategies can be easily replicated, human capital is difficult to replace and hence the fight for talent in the Indian industry. The talent pool of an organization and its HR systems enable effective implementation of strategy. These HR systems broadly include all stages of employee lifecycle right from recruitment, selection, induction to training and development, performance management, compensation, industrial and employee relations. An HR strategy comprising of these systems is then aligned to the business strategy. To enable this strategy, capable professionals are required and hence an institute like SIBM Pune; whose HR specialization is considered by the industry to be among the top 3 courses ( along with XLRI and TISS) in India; grooms future HR leaders. This is further validated by the large number of SIBM Pune alumni in HR leadership positions across global organizations. Highly experienced faculty imparting practical exposure, live projects, industry ready syllabus, workshops and lectures by industry experts- these things add to the solid foundation companies look for in HR managers. An excellent placement with varied profiles is then an obvious outcome of a rigorous yet fun-filled course. The older administration-intensive HR is giving way to the new strategic- value add HR. This era has no scope for past apprehensions like HR managers not becoming CEOs. HR as a profession is continuously evolving and so by choosing HR in SIBM Pune, you can be a part of that change.
  • 14. Ashish Chabbra, MBA II (Marketing) Many would contend, the basis for marketing is the 4 Ps by Philip Kotler, but, for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the field, one more „P‟ is needed, that is, Passion. Marketing in simple words is about knowing the pulse of the customer- about how you know what to offer, how to communicate with them and how best to deliver results in terms of revenue. An important aspect in the study of the beautiful subject is the dynamic nature of the consumer preference, acceptance and taste. So, the study is ever evolving and thus more interesting continually. Figuratively speaking, it is about having your ear to the ground and eyes to the sky, all the time! A successful marketer is not just reactive to the competitor‟s activities, but, also proactive to ensure the first mover‟s advantage is made full use of. Marketing at SIBM Pune in particular is one of the best decisions that I personally took. Here learning takes place through various mediums to ensure that the understanding is consistent with what is intended. The experienced faculty, both in-house and from the corporate, use a mix of methodologies, from handholding at the formative stage, to, throwing you in the deep sea- as the grades depend upon the live market based assignments and projects. Apart from the field and off-field assignments, corporate projects are available for students to apply to, and provide ample opportunity to learn and win accolades. The well-stocked library and the online databases available on the campus bring the opportunities to learn, to another level altogether. This is exceedingly well complemented with real life cases and experiences shared by the faculty who have spent enough time in the industry to supplement the lessons with anecdotes of their own.
  • 15. Kedar Bothe, MBA II (Operations) The Operations batch at SIBM Pune has been a trendsetter when it comes to academic discipline with due focus on knowledge and concepts that are learnt and implemented as well. The course structure for Operations at SIBM Pune tries to cover all aspects and industry practices related to Operations Management. Subjects like Operations Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Total Quality Management, World Class Manufacturing, Basic & Advanced Operations Research, Manufacturing Resource Planning, Materials Management, Six Sigma focus on Manufacturing sector. There are subjects like Operations Management in Services, Enterprise Resource Planning and Project Management which focus on Services sector too. Thus one gets to see the holistic view of how businesses are run. Apart from usual academic schedule, students take up projects in a given industry as a part of 'Learning Lab' initiative. The 'Operations Club', a student‟s initiative conducts case study competitions and guest lectures from various companies - the prominent ones being i2 Technologies Pvt Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd., Motorola Inc. etc. Plant visits like Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCB) Pune, Mahindra Automotive (Renault) Nashik etc are conducted to facilitate better understanding of concepts. The Operations batch of 2011 has people from diverse educational backgrounds. There is also a healthy mix of freshers and students with prior work experience in various sectors along with budding entrepreneurs, which facilitates quality interaction and peer learning.
  • 16. Hakim Allanabanda, MBA II (Finance) Finance at SIBM Pune equips you with the entire gamut of skill sets of knowledge, learning and application to thrive in the financial world. The well planned curriculum coupled with hands on experience of analytical tools provides an ideal mix of both classroom and practical training. Students are equipped with core finance subjects such as Corporate Finance, Commercial Banking along with the rationale and present status of financial intermediation right from the first semester. Courses on company valuation and live working sessions of the stock exchange only add to the learning and give students a feel of the financial world. Be it interaction with some of the best faculty, exposure to latest software‟s and familiarization with the latest trends, all are an integral part of the program, chalked out to give you the best possible experience of a B-school. At SIBM Pune, you get the edge of working with leading corporates on live projects, which not only give you exposure to the actual industry but also help you in making an informed decision on the appropriate branch of Finance you want to work with. Above all, the chance of networking with some of the brightest minds and business leaders of tomorrow‟s corporate world provide the ideal motivating surrounding and peer learning setup.
  • 17. A Student Driven Institute SIBM Pune takes great pride in being a student-centric institute. Students here are entrusted with resources and responsibilities early on in their academic career. They are encouraged to take important administrative and policy decisions that sculpt their future and that of the Institute. This facilitates their all-round development over and above academic performance. The Students' Council is one such student body responsible and accountable for numerous activities on the campus throughout the year. What follows below is a brief description of what each team in the Students’ Council does. The Alumni Team (AT) maintains the crucial link between the Institute and the 31 batches of management professionals that it has produced over the years. It ensures constant and fruitful interaction with the 4700+ strong alumni while at the same time strengthening their bond with their alma mater. In addition to annual reunions, the team organizes alumni meets and dinners across the country to initiate and encourage communication among the alumni. The Aspirant Relations Team (ART) is the student interface for those aspiring to join the Institute. With wide ranging activities like iAspire - the online portal, nationwide brand building campaigns, career counseling sessions like Coffee With SIBM, Sizzlers & Silhouettes, online buddy programs and help lines, it aims to make the transition to student life at SIBM Pune smoother. B-Quizzed @ SIBM is a National Level Business Quiz conceptualized by ART, aimed at all undergraduate (UG) students and MBA aspirants to provide them with a glimpse of the Business World. • 19. I have tweeted something below I overheard while I was sitting on one of the window panes of a Students’ Council team room. Nitin Prabhu, MBA II (Operations) “When the student is ready, the teacher appears”, goes an old adage. You never know how and when you learn things. All that is necessary is a willingness to learn. The Students‟ Council at SIBM Pune has been one such experience for me. Having only heard about its activities earlier, I had the first tryst with its activities when I, as an aspirant attended the Admissions Process. I was so overwhelmed by the experience that I at once wanted to be a part of the Council, should I make it to the institute. The great part of the Students‟ Council here is that you are given total freedom in planning, designing and executing important events and activities of the institute like Placements, Admissions, Corporate Interactions, Institute Branding, Guest Lectures etc... With timely inputs and guidance from able faculty members, it is a great learning experience. It allows you to practically apply most of your theoretical learning in classes. And what is more important is that you are encouraged to learn from the mistakes that might happen. The most important take away from being in the council is it inadvertently grooms you well to take on responsibilities and proactively look out for opportunities and make the best use of them. The constant brain storming sessions, the intense detailing in the planning, working on contingencies, the innumerous night outs for ensuring the success of the events have all left us with sweet memories and a great set of colleagues who have become good friends now. In short, being a part of the Council has made us well equipped to handle the demands of the Corporate World.

Students undergo screening tests and proficiency tests regularly in the first and second year of their MBA programme as a precursor to the placement season. Weekly Business Awareness Tests (BAT) are conducted to aid preparations for the Summer Internship Recruitment Program (SIRP). Similarly, Corporate Awareness Tests (CAT) and Domain Tests are conducted weekly to aid Campus Recruitment Program (CRP) preparations. In addition to these, exclusive Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews are conducted for the students to help them with their placement preparations. Summer Internships On completion of two semesters of dedicated educational endeavor, students secure a two-month project with a business organization. This industry exposure helps them bridge the gap between classroom learning and market realities. Feedback from the respective organization helps students identify their strengths as well as areas of improvement. • 22. Student Diaries Now, you may find it a little difficult to believe all that I have told you. After all I’m just a bird. But this is what some of the students studying here have to say. Karan Shah, MBA I (Marketing) The first thing that attracted me to SIBM Pune was its campus set amidst the hills of Lavale near Pune, breathtaking is a word that frails in comparison to the sheer beauty of the environs here. But after having spent about two quarters (MBA-speak) here I have found many things that I love about this institute; be it the student-driven culture, the amazing opportunities for learning, the superior facilities for recreation or the unique people that I‟ve met. It is usually the people that define your experience of an academic institute and SIBM Pune has not disappointed. I have learnt more here, over a cup of chai, bouncing ideas around with a trusted group of friends than anywhere else. The synergy of teamwork that I‟ve experienced here is unparalleled. The faculty here goes beyond their traditional roles as facilitators and actively mentor students to achieve greater success. All this combined with a visionary Director who has instituted many positive changes makes me sure that my life at SIBM Pune would be continue to be an enriching experience.
  • 23. Vaishnavi Nayel, MBA I (Marketing) A new chapter of my life began on 7th June 2010; it marked the start of my journey at SIBM Pune. It will always be one of the most significant and memorable segments of my life and one that I know I will come to read and reread in the years to come. I remember the day I stepped into the portals of SIBM Pune with my parents, brother and luggage in tow. It was a sunny afternoon in early June and there was a whirlwind of exhilaration and anxiousness brewing within me. I had spent my summer envisaging life at SIBM Pune and since it was the first time I would be living away from home, I was giddy with excitement at the idea of campus life. In the first week, I met more people than I can remember, courtesy: the coffee shop. Soon we were inundated in assignments, foundation tests and presentations. Classes were engaging and kept us on our toes. I joined the Corporate Interface Team, and was involved in a variety of activities throughout the semester. Then, along came Transloocent, our inter-class fest. Waking up at dawn to practice for cultural events, lining up by the poolside to watch relays in the evenings and lobbying for each of our classes created a remarkable bonhomie amongst us. I‟m just a semester old at SIBM Pune but it truly feels like home, and still my chapter has many a page that need penning. But I‟ve got one and a half years left, and you know what, I have a feeling my ink might just run out!
  • 24. Sarah Matthews, MBA I (Human Resource) B-schools are a universe of the never-seen, whether you are a quasi- teenager or a 6 year working veteran. SIBM Pune is a portal to learning, experience and glory you wouldn‟t get elsewhere. As a student at this premier institute, this is my attempt to give you an inside view of life within this beautiful campus. SIBM Pune offers an opportunity and not schooling. I have learnt so much more than can be absorbed from books in this institute. The methodology of teaching that is followed gives me a chance to broaden my thinking and look at every aspect of the problem presented. The enlightening talks of peers, corporate big wig‟s seminars, obscenely difficult case studies, insane night outs, cut throat competition etc. are all a part of the experience that I have had as a part of this college. There is always the „short-of-time‟ syndrome, but hey, that is what management is all about. Being a part of such an eclectic crowd and working in a team with people who are brimming with ideas, an experience that only SIBM Pune can offer. Sonali Deshmukh, MBA I (Finance) Coming to SIBM isn‟t just about getting an MBA degree. It‟s about the whole process of getting to your graduation day. And it‟s one helluva ride! It simply invades your life. My time here has been a frantic and immensely enjoyable melee of activities… making friends, rushing to class, submissions, deadlines, brainstorming and what not. These are the times when you learn about camaraderie, teamwork, meeting deadlines, eating late, sleeping even later, and fighting with friends… And you become addicted to this way of life, which makes you sound professional and a gem of a friend.
  • 25. Niket Khaitan, MBA I (Finance) Challenging my thinking, that‟s probably what I‟m doing most of the time at SIBM Pune. Life here is as simple as the process of unlearning and learning, constantly. The breath-taking location and brilliant infrastructure act as catalysts and give us an unfair advantage in this process of learning. Academics at SIBM Pune are rigorous to say the least and that‟s for a good reason. We believe that a framework for questioning current management practices can only be built on a foundation of strong academics. The pedagogy at SIBM Pune is built around the principles of experienced teachers, open ended teaching, and the nurturing of argument. SIBM Pune strongly believes in the all-round development of its students and has arguably the best sports complex of any b-school in the country. All in all, the brilliance of the students, provoked by the best of teachers, and aided by an awe-inspiring campus results in an MBA experience worth dying for.
