Industry curation handout fv
1. Introducing Industry Curation as a model – the best of all worlds
Industry
Curation Education
Marketing
Industry Curation aims to reveal meanings and relationships through the use of original objects. This is done
by first-hand experienceand by illustrative media as well as the communication of factual information.
It is derived from the idea of heritage interpretation. Heritage interpretation is used to communicate the
nature, origin, and purpose of historical, natural, or cultural resources, objects, sites and phenomena using
personal or non-personal methods. Examples include audio tours of well-known tourist spots or information
boards at national parks, or at Te Papa museum, where displays are interpreted for a wide audience.
At the Open Polytechnic, we can use this model to curate a specific industry. Any industry is easily defined by
key areas or themes. Business, for example, is likely to have these key areas, for example: Insurance,
Marketing, Accounting, Small business, HR, Finance and Legislation. Each of these is then defined around the
mechanisms used to implement these areas/themes. This part of the Framework would be presented in the
form of a website.
The website would funnel potential students towards educational qualifications. This part of the model is
where the Learning Management System starts. It would include information about qualifications, careers,
pathways, enrolment into educational institution and ePortfolio facilities. This is where people are able to
sign up to start collecting artifacts, collate assessment activities and engage with industry and education
organisations. It is important to note that this web presence does not require enrolment or application to
the institution. It is a free access service. It is envisioned that the ePortfolio element could be offered for
Learners to begin their collection of artefacts prior to committing to enrolling for the qualification. This
allows people to ‘get familar’ with the Industry area without having to commit to enrolling to discover that it
may or may not be their ‘cup of tea’.

someone who has never
Interpret encountered it before
Support the use or
understanding of the artifact
with an interactive tool that
Support can be used in the industry
(app for mobile device or

interactive experience that
Educate better supports the
