3. Real-Time Online Formative
Assessment Built on the CCSS
Teachers can change daily instruction with the power of a reading skill
assessment that measures student achievement in real time to drive
instruction. Using embedded formative assessment, teachers identify the skills
that each student has mastered and which ones he/she needs to focus on next.
The online tool measures students’ skill-by-skill achievement using the Common
Core State Standards for reading literary and informational text. Every teacher
and administrator knows which students are achieving, which students need
differentiated instruction, and exactly what to do and say. Teachers can
collaboratively add notes and history and share in the assessment process.

The push for identifying essential CCSS in a global/economic context has to do with ensuring the US education system is producing students who are prepared to be successful with the demands of college or careers. As we’ll talk about in a bit, currently, students are not prepared for these demands.BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR PRESENTER:Since the beginning of the standards movement in the 1970s, every state has developed its own set of academic standards. There are many similarities across states, but enough differences to create significant inconsistencies in emphasis and practice. The CCSS are an attempt to identify the standards that everyone can agree on as most important, allowing for greater focus and streamlining of curriculum. The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers joined together to do this. Describing educational curriculum is not something the federal government can do. It is precluded from mandating educational practice across states. Education, according to the US Constitution, is a right and responsibility of the states, so the states got together to create their own common set of standards.
