New civilizations emerged in China between 2200-250 BCE in two major geographical regions. The eastern zone, which was better for agriculture, was separated into the Yellow River Valley in the north where millet could be grown and the Yangzi River Valley in the south where rice could be grown. These river valleys provided natural resources like timber, stone, and metals and supported large agricultural populations along the rivers.
