Festivals and events are important for tourism and local economies in County Waterford. Successful festivals can generate over €1.5 million for the local area by bringing in visitors who spend money. The County Waterford Festival of Food in 2011 attracted over 17,000 visitors, generating over €718,000 in publicity value and over €847,000 spent in the local area. Supporting festivals is one of the county's goals to raise the profile as a place to visit and expand the tourism season. There is a need to define distinct roles for local authorities, partnerships, and Fáilte Ireland in supporting festivals going forward as funds diminish.
