Current Career and Salary Data for Cosmetology School Graduates
Cosmetology jobs are increasing,
particularly in the esthetician area that is
expected to add 11,700 jobs, or by 25
percent, in the next decade.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor,
between the years 2010 and 2020,
126,200 of total additional jobs will be
added to the personal appearance
industry.
Experts for the BLS cite an aging population and a growing interest in health
and appearance as factors in the job category growth.
The nail technician field is also growing with an additional 13,600 nail jobs
added by 2020. Personal hair styling and care services will also increase,
according to projections.
Regarding specific areas in the cosmetology, the shampooer category of the
industry is expected to decline by 9 percent, while barbers will increase by 7
percent with an additional 4,500 jobs by 2020. The number of hairstylists
will increase by 16 percent with an addition of 98,400 positions.
While the trend for the quantity of positions is expected to rise, the salary
outlook is less auspicious. The salary range for a hairdresser is $17,000 to
$41,490, and the average is $22,760. The geographical region and target
customer of a salon will frequently determine the salary of a cosmetology
position. While a rural salon worker may earn less than the average salary,
an urban employee with high-earning clients could make more than $40,000
per year.

Graduates can expect to encounter a competitive job market for the highest
paying and more prestigious positions that are inherently more desirable,
while acquiring an entry level position may be easier than in years past,
particularly in the esthetician field.
Other factors that may impact salary scale and availability of employment
are experience and internships prior to graduation. Employers are looking for
candidates that have commercially demonstrated skills that lower a
business's risk in hiring for a new position. Submitting a letter of
recommendation from a supervisor or mentor with a resume and application
materials can add evidence to the proven experience you have earned while
learning the craft of cosmetology.
A salon's brand or style is the approach to client relations that the owner or
business director promotes. Learning about the expectations prior to
submitting an application or interview through a contact or an informal
phone interview can improve your success rate in a job seeking campaign
for a position with a coveted company. Your appearance will also
communicate more than a typical job candidate due to its reflection of your
skill and ability.
