Reggaeton originated in Panama in the 1980s as Jamaican dancehall artists began influencing Panamanian music. It was later promoted and popularized in Puerto Rico in the 1990s as Caribbean immigrants from places like Haiti migrated to Panama to escape political instability and brought the genre with them. While reggaeton draws from various Latin American and hip hop influences, its roots can be traced to Jamaican reggae. Some of the most famous early reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee are from Puerto Rico and helped spread the genre internationally in the 2000s with hit songs like "Gasolina."
