What you have: Photo editing software READ Design Studio discs • READ Backgrounds (.jpg) • Layered Backgrounds (.psd) • Type files or treatments (.eps, .jpg, .png) File extensions: •.psd files are layered, & must be used with Photoshop®, Photoshop Elements®, InDesign as part of Creative Suite, or GIMP •.jpg files can be used with Publisher, Word •.png or .eps files contain transparent backgrounds, and are easiest to use using themed type files for note cards, stickers, temporary tattoos, or iron-on transfers

USING BOOKMARK FILES When is a bookmark not just a bookmark? • It’s a business card • It’s a reader’s advisory • It’s a promotional tool • It advertises upcoming events Thanks to Idaho Commission for Libraries, Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, & Mascoutah Community High School for the bookmark samples.
- 6. • Insert your silhouetted reader into the file. • Adjust layers by clicking the eye on or off and using the Move tool to adjust size and placement. • To rotate a layer in 15 increments, hold Shift while using the corner rotation arrows. • To duplicate a layer, select it in the Layer Box, hold ALT, and then left-mouse click and drag. • To print multiple bookmarks per page, open a new document sized to your print paper. Open.jpg version of bookmark, and use above method to duplicate and arrange as many bookmarks as possible on page. • Choose File > Print. Click Page Setup to ensure paper size matches your document and Print. • Or, search the Microsoft Office bookmark templates to find one that suits you • Online commercial printing resources include: gotprint.com and uprinting.com

Banners, Buttons, Stickers,Tattoos • In Photoshop, create a document the size of the object you wish to print • Insert READ disc of your choice and File > Open to select .png, .psd, or .eps READ type treatment. • After customizing to your needs, save as .jpg or .pdf • Use Mail Merge >Labels function to print your own labels according to the product’s template • Work with a local print shop to print large quantities or banners Ann Cocca, Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library.

HAVE FUN WITH DISPLAY • Use READ® backgrounds to create section titles or special display signs for new and themed collections • File > Open the poster background of your choice • Create a text box & match the font • Grab color using eyedropper and paint bucket • Add your own logo • Save as .jpg or .pdf • Print on card stock or laminate
- 9. • Using Add to your environment Use the poster backgrounds to enhance the READ® message in your school or library with the help of a craft supplier, including: • Window clings • Dry erase boards for story times & events • Mouse pads • Widget for your webpage

Share a strong message • Mugs for prizes or gifts • T-shirt and tote bag transfers • Aprons for staff • Trading cards for kids • Holiday and thank you cards • Window clings You’ve got lots of great ideas. What’s the best way to get them made? • Use professional printing for outreach promotion in bulk • Acquire your own supplies from Texas Craft or other • Consider digital photo companies such as Shutterfly for photo cards, mousepads, and mugs

- Today, we’re going to turn away from posters to what we call Creative Ideas, or other ways you can use all the content packaged in your discs, whether you have the READ DS Box Set, the DVD G&S, or the individual READ CDs 1 or 2.
- These files are compatible with any editing software that allows you to open and manipulate .psd files. Of course, the resources we provide online, the videos and step-by-step instruction are tailored to Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, which we’ll be using today. Some users have also found great success with GIMP, a free open-source software, and we know that many users also use Publisher to quickly put together a number of products and handouts for your school or library. You cannot use Publisher to edit the layered files, but you can always save a finished RDS product as a .jpg and copy it over to use however you like in Word or Publisher. If there’s something else you’re using and that is working for you, please go ahead and tell us about it. We’d like to share as many resources with you as we can.

- When it comes to the READ type treatments and backgrounds, you are really only limited by your imagination. As you see here, to make a temporary tattoo, you can pick up tattoo paper from a craft supplier for inket or laserjet printers, and simply pull the READ type file that’s the best fit for you onto the template document that comes with your tattoo paper. You could also have these printed commercially. You can use segments of posters you’ve already created to make your own buttons for staff and volunteers, or many any number of stickers for giveaways, to promote programs, school reading initiatives, or the library generally. At the top of this slide, you can see the banner that Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library created with a local print shop using a type file that perfectly matched their mascot. They used the same “bugs” logo to make bookmarks, t-shirt transfers, and tattoos. A coordinated effort makes for a great, long-lasting, inexpensive outreach effort.
- As we discussed, the poster backgrounds themselves lend themselves to great permanent signage or section titles. Can use them to create readers’ advisories on almost any theme. This is where the DVD Genres and Subjects has some really nice options. This gaming background is perfect for all of the gaming programming we’re seeing for teens.
- The READ® message is simple and strong. Branding for you library can be extended in so many ways. A t-shirt transfer can be an easy way to identify staff and in the summer. Can use an 8.5 x 11 t-shirt transfer for a center logo or use small cutouts for logos on the sleeves.
- A quick license review to keep in mind as you create new products. The READ Design Studio products are intended for use by non-profit institutions, libraries and schools, and you cannot sell the various products you make. You can certainly display them with pride and give them away, use them in outreach or as prizes. You can also use them in your online promotions. If you own the products, you can use any work that you’ve made on your website, newsletter, or Facebook page. You can also share your READ posters or any other READ Design Studio creations on our official Read Design Studio group Flickr pool. So please stop by check that out.
