This plenary took place on Wednesday, October 7, at 8:30 am at the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH) in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. The Road to Professionalism: Reflective Learning and Reflective Practice William T. Branch, Jr., M.D, is the Carter Smith, Sr., Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He founded the Primary Care Residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1974. He was a key leader of the New Pathway project at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Branch served as a member of the SGIM Council and later served as Secretary. He was the second recipient of SGIM’s National Award for Career Achievements in Medical Education. He subsequently co-edited the first JGIM Education Issue. He is a faculty member for AACH and is the immediate Past President. In 1995 he started at Emory University School of Medicine and became Director of the Division of Internal General Medicine. He more than tripled the size of the Division, and founded a Primary Care Residency Program and a Faculty Development Program for young faculty members. He is author of numerous papers published in peer reviewed journals and is the editor of five textbooks.

This plenary took place on Tuesday, October 6, at 8:30 am at the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH), in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. The Path to Safe and Reliable Healthcare Michael Leonard, MD Michael Leonard, MD, is the Physician Leader for Patient Safety at Kaiser Permanente, a Principal at Pascal Metrics, and a Faculty member at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). An Honors graduate of the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Michael did his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology at Harvard’s Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, with fellowship training in cardiac anesthesia. Michael was a practicing anaesthesiologist for 14 years with the Colorado Permanente Medical Group, where he was Chief of Anesthesia, Chief of Surgical Services, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. In 1999, he helped Kaiser forge a collaborative relationship with Dr. Robert Helmreich’s Human Factors Research Project to work on the application of human factors teamwork and communication training in medicine. For the past several years, he has taught extensively throughout the Kaiser system and outside organizations in high-risk areas such as surgery, obstetrics, critical care and others to enhance safety. His relationships with outside organizations include Duke, Baylor, Sloan Kettering, ICSI, Minnesota Children’s, Ascension, Adventist, VHA, Greater New York Hospital Association and others. At the IHI, he has been active in several domains, including the Patient Safety Officer Training Course, Transforming Care at the Bedside, the Superior Performance Initiative in the United Kingdom, and Patient Safety Scotland.

This plenary took place on Monday, October 5, at 8:30 am during the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH) 2009, in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. The Silent Healer; The Role of Communication in the Placebo Effect Jozien Bensing, PhD, was born in 1950 in Tilburg, the Netherlands. After finishing her formal education as clinical psychologist at Utrecht University, she started a research career at the Netherlands Institute for General Practitioners. She is founder and first president of the European Association of Communication in Health Care. In 1985 she became director of the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research. She was appointed as full professor of Health Psychology at Utrecht University in 1991. She is a member of several councils and committees on the interface between the scientific world and healthcare, such as the Netherlands Society of Sciences, the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences, the Dutch Health Council and the National Advisory Council on Health Research. She supervised more than 20 PhD-theses and wrote more than 200 publications, mostly on healthcare communication and related issues. In 2003 Jozien Bensing became the first non-American to receive the international George Engel Award for “outstanding research contributing to the theory, practice and teaching of effective healthcare communication and related skills” from the American Academy on Physician and Patient (now AACH). In 2004 she received a royal decoration (‘Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau’) for her work in translating scientific knowledge into public. She received the prestigious SPINOZA-award for her research on doctor-patient communication in 2006; in 2007 she was chosen to become a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, which consists of the top-200 most prestigious Dutch scientists.
