HTC One (E8)
Review in pictures
Borrows looks from its sibling, but not the class
•If both the E8 and its progenitor are kept side-by- side, it’s difficult to guess which one is which, without picking them up
•The location of buttons and various ports are also identical
•However, handling is a different matter altogether
•The E8 is fashioned out of a polycarbonate material, compared to the premium metallic casing of the M8
E for elegance
•With the use of plastic, the E8 weighs less than the M8 and isn’t as slippery
•The dual curved edges at the rear also helps to improve handling
•It might not look as premium as its brother, but has a distinct styling of its own
•Even with a plastic body, the device has a better look and feel than other plastic offerings
The 5-inch display offers stunning visuals
•Similar to the One M8, the E8 has a 5-inch S-LCD 3 display
•It features a full HD resolution equating to a pixel density of 441 ppi, which results in sharp text and images
•With ample brightness, it’s easily viewable outdoors
•Also, it gets a protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3
No Duo camera...
•Unlike the innovative duo camera setup on its premium sibling, the E8 features a conventional camera
•A 13-megapixel BSI sensor at the rear is supplemented by an LED flash
•The camera app is similar, offering various adjustable settings as well as modes
•HTC’s Zoe is also available, allowing you to create short videos of up to 3.6 seconds
•The front is adorned by a 5- meg BSI sensor for selfies and video calls
… but a decent and super-fast shooter instead
•In terms of image quality, the camera captures ample detail, however it isn’t able to reproduce colours well
•That said, macro shots turned out great
•It loses out in low-light photography
•There is zero shutter lag, making it ideal for capturing action shots
Adds a sixth sense to Android
•The latest Android OS is on offer, layered with HTC’s proprietary Sense 6 UI
•It comes with HTC’s trademark customisations including BlinkFeed, Zoe and more
•BlinkFeed aggregates content from various websites and social networks in a visually appealing feed on the home screen
•Other features are the same as its big brother
Delivers snappy performance
•It shares the same internals as the HTC One (M8)
•Performance is taken care of by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core chipset clocked at 2.5GHz and supported by a 2GB of RAM
•An Adreno 330 GPU handles the heavy graphics with ease
•The phone works like a charm even while playing resource-intensive games like Asphalt 8: Airborne and Riptide GP2
Offers plenty of storage
•The One (E8) is equipped with 16GB of flash storage
•Users can access 9.8GB space for installing apps and saving personal files
•This can be extended further up to 128GB with the use of a microSD card
•It also supports USB OTG capabilities for plugging in flash drives
Backed by solid battery life
•The device sips juice from a 2,600mAh embedded battery
•With moderate usage, we were able to run it through more than a day
•In our standard battery test of playing an HD video on loop, it ran continuously for 11 hours and 20 minutes
•It offers an Extreme Power Saving Mode which restricts access to basic features only, and as well as a battery saver mode
Scores a sixer in the connectivity department
•It is one of the very few flagships that come with dual-SIM support (accepts nano-SIMs)
•Also supports CDMA network on SIM 1, making it the best CDMA phone money can buy
•Other connectivity options are the usual, including dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC and Wireless Display
Specs at a glance
•5-inch display, full HD resolution (441ppi)
•2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor
•2GB RAM
•16GB in-built storage, accepts microSD cards of up to 128GB
•13-megapixel rear camera, 5MP front camera
•Dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and GPS
•2,600mAh non-removable battery
•Android 4.4.2 with Sense 6 UI
-
•Camera can’t match the competition
•No standout feature
Pros and cons
+
•Good build quality
•Gorgeous display
•Top-notch internals
•Dual-SIM support with CDMA compatibility
•Solid battery life
Rs 33,999
Pricing and verdict
“At first, the idea of doing away with the biggest USP of the HTC One (M8) – its 90 percent uber-premium metallic body – and replacing it with a polycarbonate shell felt absurd, but our experience with the E8 begs to differ. The phone has its own distinct style and offers flagship-level specs at a more affordable price point than its sibling. However, it still faces stiff competition from the Samsung Galaxy S5, thanks to its slew of price cuts, as well as the Oppo Find 7a.”
