3. What is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterised
by a tendency to seizures originating in the brain
There are 40+ types of epilepsy
Approximately 600k people in the UK have a
diagnosis and take medication for epilepsy
This equates to 1 in 103 people
4. What is epilepsy?
During seizures, normal brain activity is interrupted by
disorganised and excessive neuronal activity
Seizures occur at unpredictable times & usually without
warning
They result in a stereotyped disturbance of emotion,
awareness, behaviours, motor function, etc
Seizures disrupt daily life & can cause serious harm or death
5. Treatment
The primary treatment for epilepsy is medication
which is usually effective at stopping the seizures
Excellent adherence to medication is crucial
But many people with epilepsy find it difficult to
take medication regularly which increases the risk
of having a seizure
More seizures results in worse outcomes to
patients and more costs for the health service
