Valentine's Day originated from Saint Valentine, a Roman priest who secretly married couples when it was banned by Emperor Claudius II. On February 14th, Valentine was arrested and killed for disobeying the marriage ban. Before his death, he sent a farewell love letter signed "from your Valentine". Today, Valentine's Day traditions include exchanging greeting cards, gifts of flowers, chocolate and teddy bears, as well as poems often starting with "Roses are red, violets are blue".
