2. The Middle Ages in Europe lasted from 1000 to about
1500. For about 200 years; Arab Muslims and European
Christians fought in a series of wars called the Crusades.
Christians called Palestine, the Holy Land. Both sides
wanted to get Palestine for themselves. Some Jews were
caught in between and died. For the
Muslims, Mohammad died in Palestine, but for
Christians, Jesus lived and died there. The first crusade
lasted from 1147 to 1149. There were also other
crusades, like the Children's Crusade.

3. Life was hard in the late Middle Ages. The cities were
dirty, unlike the countryside. In the city people threw
garbage out of their windows. The city was less likely to be
attacked. The people in cities formed guilds, a guild is a
group of people doing one craft. An example is a baker
guild, or a carpenter guild. They needed people with more
education, so they made universities. Universities began
around 1100. The most famous teacher was Thomas
Aquinas. Cathedrals took about 100 years to build. They
usually had stained glass windows. The black death
(plague) started in 1347 and ended in 1351. About 55,000
people died from it!
