3. Thesis
Many women are unaware of some
dangerous statistics concerning assaults
and victimization; therefore through my
research and knowledge I will give other
girls ways to protect themselves if
something were to happen to them.
4. Personal Relevance
After learning about the increase on campus related
attacks I wanted to learn about different ways to
protect myself as a freshman in college. I also wanted
to teach other people (men and women) ways to help
protect themselves as a victim.

• One rape or sexual
assault occurs every
two minutes
• In the year 2000, 8%
of college women
experienced rape in a
six month time.
• 17% of rape or
sexual assault victims
were victimized by
someone they knew

9. More Statistics
• In 2008 rate of intimate
partner victimizations for
females was 4.3
victimizations per 1,000
females age 12 or older.
• Offenders had weapons in
6% of rapes and 55% of
robberies.
• Women who fight back gain
an 86% chance of avoiding a
rape or injury.

Knowing self-defense is not just about knowing moves. Its
about knowing your surroundings and getting out of
dangerous situations. Having done the research I do believe
that it will help me and you in the future should something
happen.

38. Practice Makes Perfect
Fein, Judith. Exploding The Myth Of Self-Defense. Sebastopol, CA: Torrance
Publishing, 1993. Print.
Most women believe that it can’t happen to them because most of there life nothing has. Or that a women sends out signals to provoke an assault or abuse. There is nothing that a women can do to provoke and assault.
1. College freshmen do not know the the fraternities or males she becomes friends.
2. This is usually there first time experiencing freedom so they become more vulnerable because they might be drinking more.
3. They want to be accepted by there new friends and may let down some of the inhibitions.
4. Many college women have a false sense of security because crime on campus is so under reported.
1. Older women can be lonely and some are searching for companionship. They may lower there normal standards or take risks they usually wouldn’t
2. They can be over confident believing they’ve been through everything and are experience. A “been there, done that” sort of attitude, minimizing any potential danger.
3. There are many older women who go throughout there lives without anything happening to them so they become less worried about being hurt.
Self-defense is a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontation skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques that enable someone to successfully escape, resist, and survive violent attacks. A good self-defense course provides psychological awareness and verbal skills, not just physical training.
Attitude- the mindset you have and the image you project.
Awareness- seeing what is going on around you.
Avoidance- simple everyday actions to reduce risk.
Action- direct steps to take when confronted.
Unfortunately criminals do look like normal everyday people. Criminals’ behavior often gives them away. 7% of people’s ability to interpret intent is through words (my body language may be fine but my words are a hint into what I may do), 80% through voice (yelling, shouting), and 55% is projected through body language. Human predators do not pounce on the first person that comes along. They take their time and evaluate whether the person is a target (the target may be a person who looks vulnerable, weak, unsure, lost, etc.) They project there intentions by watching, following and even “testing” you.
1.Criminals look for targets that appear weak, distracted or otherwise easy to subdue. someone that is vulnerable.
2.Never accepting the idea of being a victim and someone has control over your life
3.project the image that your alert and can deal with any issue that you have to face.
4.Stand tall with a upright posture, head held high, looking at your surroundings. slumping or letting your shoulders droop communicates weakness.
5.Walk with determination, with your head up, swinging your arms and exuding confidence. project the image that you are alert and can deal with any issue that you have to face.
Make sure that you make as much eye contact as possible when you are walking in public. Assailants do not like that because you could potentially identify them. Eye contact is a common problem with both men and women these days – they do not tend to do it while in public. This makes them one step removed from the action and therefore they are vulnerable. You will discover that holding your head high and looking people in the eye costs you nothing, however you gain not only more self-respect but also a greater security.
Experts say that awareness is like having a radar. Radar uses radio frequency’s to scan the surrounds and certain targets distances. Women should have this as well. Scan what’s around you (who’s where, what there doing and know how far away they are). Having the radar will keep you safer and more easily prepared to get away.
Trust your Instincts. If something is bothering you or something doesn’t feel right that is your instincts. There are two reasons as to why some women do not listen to there instincts. Your logical self is telling you that taking a different path on a street or to change course will be embarrassing, weird, noticeable or a ridiculous thing to do. While this is happening your instinctual self is begging you to do something unplanned, anything to move. The most frustrating part about acting on your instincts is that there is no satisfaction from changing course. We don’t get to find out if what we did was the right thing to do. most of the time there is no confirmation that our intuition even came close to being right.
Meditation is good when trying to become in control of yourself. Meditation keeps you focused and better able to prepare yourself for things that may happen in the future. Meditation helps you to know who you are and think about what you can do.
1. At residence- when considering a apartment inquire about the amount of crime in the neighborhood. look at your home like a burglar would. is there easy access inside your apartment or home?
2. Walking- know your surroundings, do not talk on cellphones, have headphones on or have other distractions that prevent you from being aware of your surroundings. never be a hero
3. Cars- lock car doors when inside, have your keys out and ready, look into the back seat of your vehicle.
4. Work- try not to work late at night by yourself, lock your purse in a desk drawer or file cabinet during the day.
1. Having any type of defense background can be useful if there is a need to become physical but knowing how to stop any type of physical defense is the key. Using martial arts or self-defense is a good way to protect yourself but there are also every day objects that can help you to get away.
1. Self-defense is about how you can get yourself out of a situation with out the use of being physical and learning how to talk your way out of situations
saying your in an argument with someone who is becoming physical walking away from that person or talking them down is reducing a risk situation
2. Martial arts- is kickboxing, tae kwondo, Ju jitsu
Having a martial arts back ground is something that is a benefit to all girls. In Martial arts they show you how to use enough force to get away not to physically hurt someone. This improves one’s strength, stamina and flexibility. These styles mostly focus on defense of the person practicing these martial arts. These are primarily striking and stand up styles. Blocks, kicks, punches and usage of knees of elbows characterizes these styles. The degree and the way these are delivered depends on each style and training (so one may be easier to complete than another).
1. Mostly it’s about common sense ways to get your way out.
2. How to talk yourself out of a situation. These classes give self-confidence to know what to do when alone.
3. They also show how not to get into the situation in the first place.
4. For example if someone is sitting on top of your car, instead of yelling and screaming and causing a fight calmly ask them to get off.
5. Reflexes are generally the most common focus of Self-defense, and with training a woman will be able to hone her reflexes so that she will be able to react sooner to an attack or an attempted attack.
Speak: Whether it is a friendship or a relationship or a a chance meeting on the street, always let a man know what type of person you are. Let them know what you will and will not take.
Tone: When something is going wrong and you feel uncomfortable express yourself. Say it quickly and loudly if you feel the need. You don’t have to insult a person or make them feel bad. Just use your words to display firmness and strength
Involve: Let others know what’s going on. Allow people around you to hear you being harassed. Start shouting the whole conversation if it helps.
Simple everyday objects can be used as a weapon of defense:
Your car keys held between your fingers
A pen or pencil
A can or bottle of soda
A stick, cane, or umbrella.
A rock from the ground
Hair spray
An ash tray
Knee
Finger Nails
Your forehead or back of your head. (very painful to the mouth or nose of an attacker)
The palm of your hand. ( Much better than your fists)
The heal of your shoe. Hurts like hell on the top of the foot of a would be attacker.
1. When in the moment people often freeze when fighting.
2. Many martial arts moves are tricky and complicated for the average person to do and are not done properly.
3. There are times when the attacker has a weapon and martial arts can not help against a knife or gun.
4. Some people don’t have enough knowledge in there field of fighting before using there techniques.
When there is someone trying to attack a women, most women immediately freeze up from fear. Say someone is on top of a women she will most likely say the number one reason she didn’t fight back is because she was too scared. The thing about fear is that it triggers physical responses that send glandular secretions into the nervous system or the fight-or-flight reflex. the fight adrenaline can make a person stronger, quicker, and able to continue fighting, despite injuries or serious discomfort. The adrenaline also makes a person more alert to the surrounding and more tuned into danger. A person experiencing these feelings can run sooner and much faster than normal.
Effects your fine motor skill performance (either slows down your movements or makes you faster and gives you more adrenaline), your brain (forces you to think faster, keeps you in the moment or takes you to a different less harmful place), auditory system(helps your hearing), visual system (tunnel vision), and increases heart rate.
By becoming angry your getting a mindset that you want to live and to not to have someone have power over you. Your mindset should be that no one has the right to hurt, push you around, treat you like crap, or take your life from you. There should be a trigger in your mind where it is survival. It could be a word or a phrase that makes you angry. You have to have the ability to move from defense to offensive instantly to survive in an encounter.
As a women and a human being we have the right to go into a situation without anxiety or fear. Self-defense courses help to bring out the courage that is inside of you. Self-esteem is important because without it you will not be confident in what you do and how you do it. In a self-defense class women learn how to defend themselves and stand up for themselves when they are being abused. Take for example a physically and/or verbally abused women. The self-esteem of that women is very low because she feels that she has to live up to the expectations of her husband. Those women do not know how to stand up for themselves and to say no. Taking a class will raise the self-esteem of that women so much that she could find the will power to leave her husband.
Never put your back toward your attacker. Having your back toward that person gives them the ultimate power. With your back towards a person they could easily climb on top of you and hold you down.

Using self-defense won’t be as effective unless you practice. Just because you’ve seen and learned a move on time doesn’t mean you will remember it if the time comes to use it.
There is no guarantee when it comes to self-protection. Self-defense increases your awareness and preparedness.
