music industry, here they are in order of size.

3. UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP
Universal music group, the biggest of the big four. Its origins date back to 1934 where it was founded as
DECCA Records USA however was developed in 1990 and became MCA music entertainment group.
Six years later UMG was formed which went on to become what it is known as today “Universal Music
Group”.
Headquarters- USA.
UMG;s strength and legacy could be said to be due to the fantastic record labels it has, which include
A&M/Octone, Barclay, Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Disa, ECM, Emarcy, Fonovisa, Interscope Geffen A&M
Records, Island Def Jam Music Group, Machete Music, Mercury Records, Polydor Records, Show Dog–Universal
Music, Universal Motown Republic Group, Universal Music Latino, Universal Music Group Nashville (which
includes Lost Highway, MCA Nashville and Mercury Nashville), and Verve Music Group.
Sony music Entertainment have worked and are currently working with a number of well known and extremely

4. SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT
Sony corporation of America and Bertelsmann AG merged in 2004 to form
Sony BMG music entertainment. Apart from Japan the merger affected both
companies negatively world wide. Due to this the Sony corporation of
America brought Bertelsmann's half of the company and brought the
company back on its feet gaining a huge 1.2 billion dollars. Sony corporation
of America now owned 100 percent of the company and renamed it as Sony
Music entertainment.

5. WARNER MUSIC GROUP
Originally known as Warner Bros records the company was founded in 1958 however in
1967 was sold to Seven Arts Productions. In the 1970's Warners success and status
in the music industry began to grow. In 1972 the company had renamed itself WEA
corp which stood for its three main labels: Warner Bros, Elektra and Atlantic. In 2004
it was renamed Warner music group when it became independent.

6. EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING
EMI is a British music company which was founded in 1931, it was known as the
Electric and Music industries ltd, it has a merger of the UK Columbia
Graphophone company and the Gramophone company which was well known
then for its record label its masters voice.EMI Group also has a major publishing arm,
EMI Music Publishing — also based in London with offices globally. The company was
once a part of the FTSE 100 Index but since February 2011 it has been fully owned by
Citigroup (which took the then financially troubled company over because of more than
$4 billion in debt it held).
